1894-P Morgan seems like a good buy

Comparing the mintages of 110,000 to 100,000 the 94-p is a LOT more inexpensive. Why?

The 1893-S for some reason has a much lower survival rate than the 1894.
  • A lot of it is just hype surrounding the 93-S

There are more 1893-S's graded by PCGS & NGC than there are 1894-P's. While The 1894 is not that inexpensive anymore i still think it is a little underpriced comparatively. I agree that a lot is hype and the 1893-S has always been recognized as the key. The mintmarked coins always got more respect than the Philadelphia mint coins. There is a correction ungoing for some of the scarcer philadelphia issues. Mintages do always reflect availability. Take the 1899-P morgan for instance. This coin has a mintage of only 330,000 however a lot are known to survive in BU. However having said that i still find it difficult to find a nice looking well-struck BU 1899 in MS64-MS65. Bob

Yes. This is especially true of prooflike Morgans. Since the proofs came out of Philly, scarce to rare PL/DMPL business strikes from Philly didn't get much respect for years, at least not enough respect. Through to the early 80s, it was most common to use proofs to fill in the Philly slots of a date and mint mark set. Today, the prooflikes are getting a bit of a boost. 1884 comes to mind. A really notable one is 1891. The lack of gem DMPLs has kept investors over in the proofs and also many high-end collectors. 1894, 1901 and 1904 have tremedous potential. The regular MS 1893, 1894, 1902 and 1904 are in the same boat. 1901 has participated a bit on its own though.

In general alot of the 1893-S Morgan Silver Dollars were released for circulation, where as the 1894-P was minted then put into bags and thrown into a mint vault. The reason there is alot of hype around the 93-S is simple. Low survival rate.....

There is a 94-P on ebay in MS63. If I had 6k I would buy it in an instant just because comparatively speaking, that coin should be worth a LOT more. I was thinking of doing a morgan set anyways down the road (maybe)
