Some 80s Wrestling cards (new scans on page 2)

I have been working on a wrestling set from 1986. It was produced in The Netherlands for Europe and Israel. There are 100 cards in the set. The cards have perforations on them. Since they were often mangled in the pack, the cards are very difficult to find in high grade. The subject matter of cards makes them pretty comical. However, when you add in that the company often misidentified the wrestler or produced two identical cards of the same wrestler, it makes it a fun set. Two of my favorites are the Missing Link and the Sheepherders. Here are some of the cards:

You gotta love the Juneyard Dog. I know in my neighborhood, all of the mean dogs hungout at the Juneyard.

Is it me, or does Muhammed Ali look a lot like Rambo? The Sheepherders- now that's funny. Nothing quite as tough or menacing as a guy who watches sheep. Alas, Luke and Butch were never given the respect they deserved. Also, where's Hawk and why is Precious Paul Ellering on that card? Ricky The Dragon looks very serious in that picture. Michael P.S. Hayes look like a big redneck as well. Oh wait, he was a big redneck.

Nice cards, thanks for the pics.
  • Takes me back to the good ol days of airplane spins. Why is it that getting someone really dizzy isn't a finishing move these days?

LUKE AND BUTCH! the new zealand sheepherders!!1!

those cards are awesome.. i remember Nikita Koloff had some epic matches with Magnum T.A. (remember that dude?)

ricky steamboat was one of my all time favorite rasslers back in the day..

embarassingly, i was a Rock N Roll Express fan.. i was always wanting them to kick the Midnight Express's ass.

also, +2 for Juneyard Dog.. RIP

The absolute best finishing move was by Ronnie Garvin and it was called the "Hands of Stone". It was just a punch in the face. Not only was it illegal, but it always knocked the other guy out cold. Why didn't he just punch them in the face in the beginning of the match?

RIP like 80% of those guys. Steamboat was my guy. That Wrestlemania match against Savage for the intercontinental title after Savage crushed his larynx with the steel bell was an absolute classic. The best part of it all was Steamboat's fake voice lessons while he was recovering. "EEEEEEEEEEE". "OOOOOOOOOO".

True comedy. I could talk about this all night.

I think Sunshine looks a whole lot like Hulk Hogan's wife. Is that Liberace on the card with Ali and Hulk?

Did Hulk Hogan ever have any hair? The dude was halfway bald all his life!

I remember the Sheik and Hacksaw Jim Duggan were arrested together smoking weed in a car while they were supposedly feuding in the ring. I guess wrestling wasn't real.

I used to like the pro wrestling when those guys were on. It is a tragedy how many of those shown are dead.

Perry, I watched that whole DVD "The Rise and Fall of the Ultimate Warrior" and it was without a doubt, the greatest thing these eyes have ever seen.

Those Sheik clips are truly amazing because he's apparently insane in real life. Awesome.

Those cards do bring back some memories. I remember when I was a little kid--being a fan of Ricky Steamboat back in the days when he would be squaring off against Rick Flair. Several years later a tour stop came to my town--I recall the headliners being Wahoo McDaniel (I got his autograph that night), The Mighty Igor, and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine.

I think it is funny that card #51 has Liberace on it.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

This is the 1986 Monty Gum set. I have opened about 50 packs and got the same sequence of cards over and over. Many panals I got weren't even seperated just folded into the packs. If you want a wrapper for your collection LMK and I will send you one. They have an image of Hulk Hogan on them.

Iron Sheik is just spouting off at the mouth and making appearances here and there to make some dough because he's old and out of money due to the drugs, drinking, etc.

But, you gotta love the Shiek going batty like he is! image

"He's trying to swallow his tongue!!!" I remember that match...
  • My brother's best friend wrestles regularly in one of the local (and much smaller) promotions, and Ricky Morton of the Rock and Roll Express still wrestles with them occasionally. It's almost comical, he'll set in the crowd, smoking like a freight train until about 5 minutes before his match, then rush backstage only to come back out and climb into the ring. Then the 'announcers' will play it off like "That's such a suprise that Ricky is going to wrestle tonight!!" image

I absolutely love this set. It was produced in Holland, and the typos and other goof-ups make it hilarious. The pictures are mostly direct ripoffs from Pro Wrestling Illustrated "centerfolds" - some of them even have the words still on the photo from the magazine.

All that said it is a tough set to find. I have a few available at $89.99 if anyone is interested. One of the best pro wrestling sets ever made, if you are into that sort of thing...

i need a youtube video of a recent Ricky Morton wrasslin match, preferably footage of him sitting in the crowd smoking also.. that would be phenomenal..

  • I have a few wax boxes of the cards. I decided that one of the boxes (50 packs) needed to be opened. One box produces around 3+ sets. They are so chessy that they are becoming a favorite of mine. Here are some additional scans:

  • I am happy this set is bringing back some good memories. I loved watching the classic matches in the early 80s. It is difficult set to find. I collect the various Monty sets produced in the 1970s and 1980s. This set one of the more difficult to put together. The quality control of the cards make the late 70s OPC look high quality. You cannot be too condition sensitive on the set.

Wow, what a concidence. Hulk Hogan was one of my boyhood idols (I was born in 1980 and the 80s was when he was at his peak popularity) and it just happens his card is #22, my b-day! How 'bout that?

Now, can we some of the backs of the cards please? image

That's a great card featuring Jim Cornette's right hand holding the racquetball racket. Looks like they got Magnum T.A. as he was slicing his forehead open. I always wondered what that growth on Dusty Rhodes' stomach was. So many questions, so little time. Looks like they got pics from about a 20 year span.

Funny how Liberachi (sp?) is between Hogan and Ali there, but does not get mentioned on the card.

Great stuff and thanks for taking me down memory lane.

joe leduc, he once threw jerry lawler out of the ring onto the announcer's table, (supposedly) breaking lawler's hip and forcing him to miss like a year of work.

    i love that canadian!

  • LeDuc was crazy. Then again most of the wrestlers were crazy. It looks like Cornette is choaking LeDuc on card 72.

Estil: The backs have no writing on them. This was common for the Monty product.

ArnyVee: Send me your address via PM. I will send you some sample cards in the general condition of my extra set. This is a strange set. If you like the cards, then I can send you a price on a set. You generally do not find any for sale. However, when I have seen them they tend to be around $100+. I would not be asking for anything near that.
  • I've always wondered why wrestling cards aren't valued more...I think many of the factors that make others sports cards collectible are also factors for wrestling:
    1-childhood memories
    2-favorite players(wrestlers)
3-enough to collect, but still kinda hard to find

I collected the '86 & '87 WWF Wrestlemania sets & the 1990 WCW set & 1991 WCW Championship Marketing sets as well as some of the early Classic brand sets among others.
