reached 90% completion - Johnny Bench Master set

redlegsredlegs Posts: 936 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have finally reached 90% completion for my Johnny Bench master set. I would like to thank all of those who have helped me along the way. I really appreciate it.

If anyone has any cards that could assist me please let me know.

For some reason it is extremely difficult to find a 1983 Topps Super Veteran Johnny Bench in high grade.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

What has made easier to obtain some of the rarer Bench issues is that there is not a lot of competition from other collectors. A few years ago there was some fierce competion on the Bench master set. Today, I seem to being going at it alone without anyone driving the prices up.

Phil, I usually look at columbia city for oddball stuff. They show a NM 1977 wendy's disc, a 1977 saga disc also in nm, a 1977 dairy isle also in nm, 2 different 1976 carousel discs in nm. Need to ask for scans but they're pretty good about that.

Joe Juhasz has a 1970 opc bench 464 listed but no condition or photo, also he has the 75 opc leaders card 308 with burroughs listed. Joe has the 1981 topps sticker listed and listed a couple super vet cards as nm/mt. Again no scans but usually good response there.

Also I found a 77 venezuelan sticker available for $150, if interested PM me and I'll get you a link. It's better looking than most of those 77s, I think it's cheap at 150 and it's definitely a reliable seller. He does have front/back scans, the card looks nice. Maybe 4 a or 5?

I'm not sure if any of those will help you but if you get good scans maybe a few are worth trying.

    congrats old buddy !

I`m know theres more than a couple of my old cards in there. They found a good home in your fine collection.

That 1977 Venez. sticker that jim was talking about,, i know who has it. And if you look at the back, it has the same glue/paper issue as mine. PSA will grade this a PSA - 1 (just like it did mine) Trust me, if it did not have the paper/glue issue on the back, dave would have it in a PSA holder !

    Keep it up Phil

    Jim,
Thanks for the information, especially the cards that Joe Juhasz has in stock. I have ordered from Columbia City in the past and have had pretty good results. Some of their inventory is way overpriced. I do have a Saga and Wendy's disc of Bench that I am in the process of putting a PSA order together.

    Lee,
You are one of the pioneers and a great contributer to the Bench master set collection. I believe I got the 1972 Pro Star Bench psa7 from you as well as the 1982 Drakes psa 8, 1981 Coke psa 8, 1981 OPC psa 7 and probably some others. Your cards have found a good home. The 1981 Coke and 1972 Pro Star are still the only ones ever graded for Bench.

  • Phil-

Congrats on reaching 90% on the Bench Master set. That's quite an accomplishment considering how much the set has grown since the registry really started gathering steam. Sorry for not being much competition for you the past few years (saving for a house in an expensive proposition), but I'm looking to get back into the fray a little more in the future.

    Grats again!
