Help! Upgrading Detector

I am new to MD and my first detector is a Bounty Hunter. No depth finder or identifier. I'm enjoying it! However, my friend also uses a bounty hunter that has both. When we are hunting hard soil, as it usually is in the summer, I'm often wondering how deep is the item? He is able to tell me and he can tell me what it is! What are your experiences in this area? Is the depth mode very reliable? Although money is a big factor, I'm thinking of simply upgrading to the next best MD that has these two items. Any tips, advise, etc from the pros would be appreciated!!!!! Thanks! Rich

  • The "upgrade" will pay for itself! ! !
I hunt about 5 to 6 hours a week. I average $25 to $50 dollars a Month in clad coins.

    Just do it ;-)

I use a White's XLT primarily and can say the depth feature is highly accurate. Generally within an inch of accuracy. The only items that give false depth readings appear to be hot rocks and crushed cans, and they're generally easily discriminated as they will read 1 inch and loud. If I dig 3 inches and I haven't found the item, then it is highly likely it is a hot rock or can. It's fairly easy to learn. White's Electronics makes a nice detector with the features you want for around $300. It's the Prizm III. I'd definitely find a dealer and get a demonstration. It's a great little detector from what I hear.

I find depth meter readings (at least on the Garrett machines I've grown accustomed to) to not be terribly accurate all the time. True, it is a nice thing to have, but not essential.

On some machines, you can judge depth by the audio signal.
