Old ANACS holder - AU50...

Gambled on eBay last night - hit BIN on an 1831 Thaler in an old ANACS AU50 holder. The picture shows lots of scuffs on the obverse, which I'm hoping most are on the plastic and not the coin itself. What do you think? If all of these were on the coin, would it still get into an AU50 slab?

Can't wait until it arrives.

That slab looks pretty clean, I have a feeling they are on the coin. Nothing wrong with that in my book on an AU50 coin. Looks like a nice one!

I really like the reverse on this piece, plus I'm looking for more coins to photograph - now I just wait.....
  • Very nice piece. Most, if not all of the scratching seems to be on the coin. However, I have purchased from this seller in the past and the coin I got was much better looking in hand as this sellers photos are taken to "highlight every little detail". It's a definite AU, and you will be quite pleased with your purchase!

I think the lighting angle is accentuating the marks. I bet in-hand it actually looks MUCH better.

Looks to be a very nice coin. Hopefully most the scratches are on the slab, look forward to seeing your pics of it.
If you have bought it from a UK seller the delay could be attributed to the recent postal strikes.

    "slap forehead"

All of the scuffs are on the coin image It's quite lustrous, but the amount of scuffing on the fields is staggering... Still love the reverse, though.

  • If your not 100% happy send it back. You'll like it less as time goes by.

I really don't have any basis to return it, so I'll pass it on to my brother. If he still doesn't like it - I'll crack it out, put it in a napkin and leave it alone for about a year... image
  • You don't need a basis. Returns are no questions asked. Take the bucks and buy something else.

That would be a nice coin, but...image

Reverse looks nice, looks like you have some prooflike qualities there, but I'm afraid the scuffs are gonna be on the coin and not the holder.

(Edit, after a second look): maybe not. Some of them appear to be "floating in space" and therefore maybe in the plastic. Others do appear to be on the coin.

(Edit again, after reading on): I see you have the coin, now. Unfortunately your "after" pic is red-X for me.

Of course. I have seen worse in AU50 slabs. Had an 1841 US Seated dollar once in an AU50 slab (old ANACS, like that, as a matter o' fact), and it was quite a scruffy character.

I have thought of commissioning somebody to image all the Holey Coin Vest and Holey Gold Hat, with obverse/reverse closeups of all the coins.

Somebody who'll work for coin trades... image
