Interstate 35W Bridge collapse in MINNEAPOLIS

I am sure most of you have seen/heard about the 35W bridge that collapsed during rush-hour traffic at about
6:05 pm today. Both the North and South Lanes fell into the Mississippi river. So far, 5 dead, but more
expected. Unbelievable event, sort of surreal to me. Just watching the news, my thoughts go to the families
of the people that were involved.

I know this has nothing to do with cards, but, cards can wait during a tragedy of this magnitude. Still
can't believe this!

Similar thing happened in CT years ago. At night the span collapsed and cars and trucks kept falling in. Horrible.

I grew up two miles south of that bridge and work a mile north of it. It has been a rough day here at work with everyone trying to verify that everyone in the building is OK. I'm truly hoping people escaped the cars at the bottom of the river. Many survived the fall so there is real hope those cars are empty.
  • My sister-in-law crossed the adjacent bridge about 5:30 pm.. What a horrific day for Minnesotans!! The good news as of today at 6pm was that they are now saying only 8-10 people are missing instead of the 30-40 earlier reported!

  • What happened in Minnesota might not have anything to do with it, but everyone in the business knows that MANY of the bridges in the US are "structurally defeciant". As a whole, they were given a grade of "D" I believe. In Michigan, our decks are literally falling on the freeways piece by piece. MDOT has been putting wood between the steel supports to catch the debris. They probably won't find all of them before they are fixed however.

We probably have some structural engineers on here that could put it in better detail. Or maybe they only collect comics.image
