Cards with LONG Provenance?

Give me a beat up vintage PSA 1 with provenance versus a PSA 10 with no provenance. The overall history of a card is far more valuable to me than the actual condition.

So that being said, are there any cool stories about cards with a long provenance? For example, can any T-206's be traced down from the original owner until today? How about for any '52T Mantles? Or any old cards, for that matter?

well some came from Alan Rosen's pack find. I know a gentleman who opened a box of the 52 topps back in 89 or whenever it wa found. The cards he sold from that break yielded the Mantle and Jackie robinson Psa 10's. Also, a few years ago a pack was cracked from that find which yielded, i believe, the FIRST Andy Pakfo (#1) PSa 10. I think the Lionel Carter collection recently graded by SGC were mostly the original owner. Geez I think the guy is like 90!

I have a lot of cards that once belonged to david hall, not sure if that is the right kind of provenance you're looking for. Mostly they were graded early in psa history and that's all I'm going to say about that.

I also have a team signed packers football that I bought from a former player who is a friend. No plans on selling that but it matters a lot to me that it came from a good home.

    Good topic!!

  • There are T-206 still circulating from the original childhood collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Everyone of his cards had a black old english style "F" stamped on the back. Very rare and seldom seen.

Speaking of 52 mantles, I have a friend who has the entire 1952 set from when he was a child - and EVERY single card is autographed - most in person. He lived in NJ and his neighbor growing up in the 50s worked in the yankees front office, so he got to go to the park often and loved getting his cards autographed. Pretty much all his 51-55 topps/bowman sets are fully auto'd. He has to keep them in a bank vault, they are too valuable to insure.

Someone will have to fill in the blanks, but there was an auction in the past year or so that split up the Goudey copyright cards. It is my understanding that a copy of each card was submitted and stamped.

I think a lot of the Barry Halper collection has significant provenance. He had the shotgun Ty Cobb's mother used to shoot his father, as well as Cobb's teeth I believe. Some of his auto cards had great stories with them as well.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

  • Speaking of Cobb's teeth, there is a seller on eBay right now who inherited his grandfather's sports collection and is selling it all off a little at a time. He reportedly has a lock of Ty Cobb's hair and his grandfather also had locks of hair from every major star that played in the old days. The lock of Babe Ruth's hair was already sold for over 30K and I think it was purchased by a card company....inserts anyone? lol

They are all raw - this collector has no interest in grades. I haven't seen them, but from what he tells me they are probably mostly in (psa 4-6 range)
