Young Head Vicky questions

Three questions for the crew here...

1) What years were the Young Head Victoria Crowns produced?
2) Did the Young Head Victoria Crowns have the same reverse design throughout the series or did it change, and if so when?
3) Are there any Young Head Victoria Crowns that are prohibitively rare/expensive?

Thanks. image

as much as i admire the Gothic Crowns, these later Vicky Crowns are the subject of my obsession:

yeah, thats a very sharp looking design! I saw one a few months ago (NGC MS63 if i recall) that went for $3200. it looked better than the grade with nice toning. Most of the others i see are circulated

    Hi Cladiator,

    1) 1839 proof only.
    1844, 45 & 47 slightly different obv. smaller date.
    2) Yes, same reverse design.
    3) In EF-UNC rare and expensive.
  • Both of these designs are first rate.

When you look at the coin design from this era and compare it with what is coming out of the mints now, it makes you wonder what has happened. I thought technology was improving, but it hasn't help coin design and minting, at least IMHO.

i agree 100%. If one were to look at these Crowns compared to US crowns of the time, there is no question that GB Crowns show much more attention to detail and engraving skill; not to mention, the ability to mint the coins according to the same exacting detail that the engraver intended. Most modern coins don't show that much attention to detail and striking skill.

Those are the only years they were made? There is one on eBay from 1842 (Link to 1842).

1844, 45 and 47. NGC has graded a total business strike at 52 coins for all three years. Combined, there is only one MS64 which is the highest graded and 18 lower grade MS; the rest are graded as AU and below. As one can readily see, there aren't a ton of these laying around in high grades.

Here's one (and no, it's not presently slabbed) image

The 1844 and 1847 are slightly tougher in choice uncirculated and better. The "abundance" of MS61-MS63 1845s extant owe their preservation to a small cache which had been held by one family in England since the date of issue. As to the 1844 and 1847 issues, you never know what might pop up. image

Thanks Mac. It's a shame they only made this gorgeous coin for 3 years.

I agree that looks like a 1/2 crown? EDIT to say I guess the only difference is in the size.

The 1/2 crown design of 1874-1887 is very similar to the crowns pictured. I've got a nice one in XF+.
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Are the reverses of the Young Head half crowns the same as the reverses of the crowns? Also, what years were the half crowns made in this design?

There are subtle differences to the wreath stems and the design beside the rose and thistle. Other than that, I can't tell the difference. I will post mine. See my above post for the years of the design I am speaking of.
