OT: (Sort of) e-Check from PayPal

An eBay winner of mine is sending an e-Check payment for an auction. He does no have a confirmed address.

Can the payment be reversed?

Would you send the items after you receive the payment or back out?

The auction was for some coins and the value is over 3K.

Thanks!
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

No way in hell I'd ship $3000 worth of coins to an unconfirmed address.

While I appreciate a buyer who uses an e-check for a $3000 purchase instead of a regular Paypal payment (saving me a bundle in fees), there's no way I ship $3000, let alone $300, to an unconfirmed address of someone I didn't know and trust.
  • the $ amount tells me no way. i have my paypal set up so that it asks me if i want to accept the payment if its unconfirmed. before i had it set up this way i was paid by the winner with an unconfirmed address and i messaged him saying no confirmed addy, no ship. he ranted about me not stating that in the auction but i held out and he got his addy confirmed. on a $50 item i`d say yes. $3k...no.

I had a buyer on eBay pay with an e-check and with an unconfirmed address. I asked him to get a confirmed address while the e-check was clearing. When the e-check cleared, I did not accept the payment and had him resend it to me with the confirmed address. The buyer was very understanding and it worked.

I had the same thing, the buyer was nice and sent another payment from his "mom's" account, still unconfirmed. I again asked him to confirm it and he disappeared, eventually becoming an NPB and then getting his NARU jacket. So I'd say this works. If a real buyer, they will fix it. If a scammer, you will soon figure it out. --jerry
  • Thanks to all who responded.

I sent an E-mail to the buyer and asked that he correct this. He has been selling quite a bit lately, so I asked him to look at it from a seller's prospective.

The "Deny" button is grayed out and it says as an eBay seller, I am supposed to accept all payment methods. I have no problem with the method, just the payer!

    I will keep everyone posted!

I know this is confusing but you have to accept the payment in order to deny it. I was confused by the graying of the DENY button also. So you have to accept the payment and then deny it.

Thanks for the tip. I just followed your instructions and denied the payment. PayPal generated a nice e-mail saying that it was denied because of an unconfirmed address.

I did state in my auction that I would accept PayPal only if they had a confirmed address. I don't understand why you would have a PP account and not confirm an address. I've had PO boxes near my office that I've used (for convience not trying to hide) and I've confirmed each one of them.

Honest, legitimate buyers will have no problem with the way you handled this.

If your preferences are set to deny payment from unconfirmed buyers then PayPal should stop the buyer from paying. They don't with e-checks. Just one more in a litany of dirty underhanded tricks from PayPal and eBay.

But the good news here is that e-checks take a few days to clear, so if you know a payment is coming you can still take steps to refuse it.

I do agree, though, that if your preferences are to reject (or ask you whether to accept) payments from unconfirmed addresses, it should also apply to e-checks. But if they did that, they'd probably eliminate the $5 cap on e-check fees. Maybe it's best to leave well enough alone in that case....

The person is sending an echeck becasue they have a new paypal account and it won't let them do over a certain ammount until the address is confirmed. I see this often on big tickets. The Echecks are nice the fee is $5 vs. over $100 witha CC on a tab like that. I have shipped a half dozen coins in the $2K-$3K range registered/insured to customers like that. Ship it to cya and you will be fine, of course wait until the echeck clears. Once you have the cash, tansfer to you bank account and I don't see your risk.
  • clackamas,

This person has a 160+ feedback on eBay (100%) and a 22 rating on PayPal (verified) and has been selling the coins that he is buying from me. All of this looks OK and it may have gone through without a hitch, but I have my PP account set to ask me about unconfirmed addresses or unverified accounts. I stated in the auction that I will only ship to a confirmed address. It is pretty easy to confirm your address, so I'm not sure why people don't do it.

I'd rather walk away than get this reversed. I don't think I'm being unreasonable.

Edited to add: I'm not sure if PP can reverse an e-Check or not.

  • Follow up:

Buyer confirmed his address and resubmitted payment. I'm going to take a shot on this as soon as the payment clears (Registered & insured of course).
