Red Sox Close To Acquiring Gagne

Red Sox Close To Acquiring Gagne

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox are the winner of the Eric Gagne sweepstakes pending Gagne's consent and a review of medical records. Rosenthal says Gagne might share the closer role with Jonathan Papelbon; it would not be shocking to see Papelbon become the setup man for the rest of the year. That would be a hell of a 1-2 punch regardless and a huge asset for the playoffs.

No word on which prospects went to Texas yet.

Woo Hoo! I say...

ESPN is talking Kason Gabbard and David Murphy, plus a discussion with Boras to make it happen. If they give up Murphy, I hope they sign Gagne for a few years. Maybe this sets up Papelbon to become a starter next year? Hmmm. I love the trading deadline!
  • UPDATE: Third player going to Texas, according to Buster Olney. That would be 17 year-old five-tool outfielder Engel Beltre.

Ok I am a trading deadline junkie!

Why? Just to keep Gagne from the Yankees?

Every time Theo deals with Boras, the Red Sox get screwed. I don't see that changing with this deal.
  • Gagne I understad, Dye I don't unless they sign him for aleast a couple more years otherwise he is a 2 month rent a player.

Well Dye can add some pop to our lineup, you know when we go into those funks....

I don't think the Yankees ever were a real player in the Gagne sweepstakes. He is a great pickup for the Sox as they have a rock solid pen. I am just glad the Yankees held on to the great arms that they have which will surface in the bigs the next week or so.

Looks like a done deal -- I guess they took Tito seriously when he said "If you think you have enough pitching, it's time to go out and get more" image

Quite the closing trio -- Okj in the 7th, Gagne in the 8th, Pap in the 9th!! No need to use either for more than one inning either.

pitching wins in the postseason...but I sure wanted someone who could hit his way out of a wet paper bag (unlike JD Blew or WM Pena)

Well, the deal is done. The Sox trade Kason Gabbard (and two other minor leaguers) for Gagne. This is somewhat bittersweet for me. I really liked Gabbard.

Is that a nice way of saying that Proctor wasn't a "great arm"?

I did not have Proctor in mind. I was talking about Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy. So, when you are talking about those three kids then YES Proctor was not included image

  • Proctor just got sent to the Dodgers.

I'm fairly surprised, but pleasantly so. The Sox already had baseball's best bullpen, and now to add Gagne to it? Pretty amazing, especially since not much was given up for him (Gabbard was headed back to the minors, and Murphy had little future in Boston with Ellsbury on the way).

Hmm I was simply adding on to the Proctor comments and hadn't seen it posted here...but I guess any yankee news has to be posted by a yankee fan for it to be deemed relevant?

    Whatever.
