Brush with fame

Posting pictures of you and someone famous, athlete, actor, etc.

This is me in 3rd grade meeting Steve Largent at the opening of a sports store in Portland Oregon named GI Joes. My mom pulled me out of school to meet him. I sent the photos off to him when he was a congressman and asked him to sign them. Note the 80's brown suit Steve is wearing and my geeky Largent shirt.

How tall is Zach Thomas, and why is he wearing his grandmas shower flip flops?

Dont all athletes seem smaller in person. I was in Denver last year to watch the Seahawks crush the Donkos at home, I was staying at the same hotel as the Hawks. It was weird to see how small alot of them were. Im 6'5", I got asked for alot of autographs that weekend, actually signed a few.

Photo of my wife with Matt Hasselbeck at that hotel. This was our Christmas card last year. " To Everyone, from Matt and Stacey Hasselbeck. Photo taken by ex-husband Joe, Matt and I wish him all the luck in his future endeavors."

OK, new poster here, so please be kind. I have been lurking for about 6 months, but this is my first posting.

This photo was taken the first game after the strike ended, April 26, 1995, at the Orioles vs. Royals game in Kansas City. At that time, I was a big Ripken collector and had about 1500 Ripken items in my collection. I wanted to go to the game and my 'starter wife' said, go ahead, not interested. The ONE thing I really wanted in my collection was a picture of Cal and myself. I told my wife that I was going to come home from the game with a photo. Her quote, "yea, sure...fanboy - it'll never happen". I knew I had to have a gimmick to catch his eye. I had the sign, and I attached to the bottom of it a sign that said, "WILL TRADE SIGN FOR PHOTO WITH CAL". I was one of the first into Kaufman Stadium, and beat a path down to the far end of the 3rd base visitor's dugout. When infield practice started, Brady Anderson came up and said he would swap me a picture if he could have the sign. I gracefully declined. As this was the very first game after the strike, a reporter interviewed me in an attempt to get a quote that "fans were disgusted with the players and their strike". I did not provide such a quote. After about 30 more minutes of infield practice, Cal wanders over from SS and approaches the end of the dugout where I am at and asks, "I want to know where the street is that is named after me." I replied, "Uh, Uh, [trying to gain some composure], I don't know if there IS a street named after you, but it IS a real street sign made by a street sign company." He asked how we were going to do this (photo) and then had me climb onto Kaufman field. He also told the throng of people pressing up behind me that unless they also had a street sign to trade, they could not come onto the field. I handed my disposable point-n-shoot camera to another fan and told him to pop off a couple shots. This one turned out the best. I gave Cal the sign and was then escorted by a security guard down to the other end of the dugout (by home plate) so I could safely exit the field. At about the 5th inning, it started to drizzle and the Orioles were behind, so I went off to the local Wally-world and got the photos printed with their one-hour service. I drove on home, then handed my wife the photos. I got a steak dinner out of the photos! I really wanted to get the photo autographed, so I sent it to Bill Haelig (who is now authenticator for Ironclad Authentics) as Bill and I knew each other, had done some trading of memorabilia and information, and he had me send him an 8X10 photo. He stuck it in a stack of stuff he was sending off to the Tufton Group (Cal's PR firm at that time) and it took 5 years for the photo to come back to me. Due to the black collar on my shirt, it is tough to read, but it says, "DAVE, CAN YOU TELL ME, WHICH WAY TO CAL RIPKEN AVE?" and is then signed.

All of the people in the back of the photo are local and national reporters who were interviewing players on the first game back. This was also going to be Cal's year, as he was going to break Gehrig's record later in the year. Because of this little 15 seconds, my butt was on Sports Center that night, climbing over the fence, and there was an article about Cal in the next Sports Illustrated (the issue just after Apr. 26, 1995) that did not show me, but showed the street sign sitting on a 5 gal. bucket of sunflower seeds in the dugout, and there was a paragraph or two about the Ripken collector who traded the sign. Fast forward to 2 weeks before Sept. 6, 1995, and I get a call from a Sports Writer from the Wichita Eagle. He wanted to do a story for the Eagle when Cal's record is broken for local color. He came to my home (at that time, about a 1/2 hour south of Wichita) and we spent some time looking at my collection. On Sept. 6, the picture above (without the autograph) appeared on the front page of section 1 of the Wichita Eagle (below the fold) and about 25 column inches of story about my collection. Fast forward about 2 more years.....I get a call from FX-THE COLLECTOR SHOW, which was a national collectors show on the FX cable channel. They featured a 'super-collector' on each show and did a live remote from the collectors home. The show was an hour long and I was on about 15 minutes, scattered over the hour as they cut back and forth between my home and New York. I also had the story reported in the collector column in Sports Collectors Digest, along with the photo. It also got me a few paragraphs in the Beckett tribute magazine that came out in 1995 that highlighted my collecting interests (without photo). All of it happened because of the gimmick of trading the sign for a photo.

After 1996, I saw the handwriting on the wall and while I still watched Orioles games whenever I could, I sold off the bulk of the collection when the market was still hot, and broke even or a little better. I still have a few items that I held onto: I went to the 2000th consecutive game in Minneapolis, and Cal signed a few autos. The only thing I had was my ticket stub, so I had him sign that. I also happened to be sitting in the same section as Kelly Ripken, who flew in to surprise Cal at his 2000th game, and I asked her to sign it also. As Cal had already signed the front, she also signed the front of the ticket. There were some others that spotted what I had done and they asked her to sign their tickets, but none had gotten their ticket signed by Cal, so she only signed the back of their tickets. I also had a friend save a ticket for me from the Orioles 2131 game. I did not get to go, but have the ticket. About the only other thing I kept was an 1982 Orioles team signed ball with 28 sigs on it. HOF players on it are Cal, Eddie Murray, Jim Palmer, Earl Weaver, and for some reason, Brooks Robinson is also on there. He had retired the year before, but must have been in the clubhouse the day it was signed, as he took up two lines for his bold siggie. I sent the ball to Bill Haelig, and he authenticated it for me and told me that the ball was signed between July 15 & Sept 1, 1982, based on the players that were on the ball. The only part of the hobby I am still working on is getting signed ball cards from all of the players to put with the team ball. I have all of them, except a vintage era (82 or 83) signature of Cal on a ball card. I got the Brooksie auto as a GAI certified. All of the rest are raw without certs. I have seen a few vintage Cal sigs, but I am patient and will find the right one.

Just wanted to share and then go back to lurking for a while!
