A-Rod's 499th home run might be his 500th

Did you guys see this? From today's Associated Press wire:

Odd but true: A-Rod's 499th HR may be his 500th

"Just in case his 499th homer turns out to be No. 500, Alex Rodriguez already
has the ball. The Yankees third baseman, set to become the youngest member
of the 500-homer club, hit an eighth-inning drive in Wednesday's win over
the Royals. The ball landed in a grassy area beyond the right-field fence,
where it was retrieved. Here's where it gets complicated. On Friday,
Rodriguez will be on deck when the Yankees resume a suspended game against
the Orioles in the eighth. If he homers in the completion of the suspended
game, it would count as being hit on June 28, when the game began. That
would make it home run No. 493 -- and Wednesday's would be No. 500. Rule
10.23 (d) states: "All performances in the completion of a suspended game
shall be considered as occurring on the original date of the game."
Rodriguez, who turns 32 Friday, would surpass Jimmie Foxx (32 years, 338
days) as the youngest to hit 500."

That's an interesting bit of book keeping, but in my mind the achievement is 500 total home runs, and if he hits it in the suspended game, its still his 500th home run.
  • I completely agree. I've already argued with some people that don't think they'll honor it as his 500th home run, but i think as long as the total equals 500 they will celebrate the moment regardless of when the record books decide he hit it. It'll be interesting to see what ball is more sought after, the one he has that would be the official 500th one according to record books or the 500th total, which is officially his 493rd and still has a chance to be caught by a fan.
