Here's a question for those who are more expert than I

I received this email today. It seems odd that the coin is French on one side and English on the other. The date times out with the reigns of Elizabeth I of England and Charles IX of France. Any thoughts?

Hello,

I found your website as I was searching for information on a coin my mother and I found while digging a flower garden in 1968. I was wondering if you might know anything about it, or if not, perhaps direct me somewhere that may have information on it. I am not looking to sell, simply to find out more about the history of the coin.

The coin itself is silver in color. It is damaged, however still readable in part. The year on the coin is 1572.

One side of the coin features the bust of a man and around the edge has the letters:

CAROLUS IX * D * G *F … (this may be an E and the damage begins here, then is followed by-) CORUM REXINVIC

The other side of the coin features the bust of a woman and around the edge has the letters:

ELIZABETH * D * … NCORUM * REGINA

I would appreciate any help you may be able to give.

Thank you,

RD

Normally, you would expect something like that to be a wedding medal of some sort. Time to pull out the history books...

    found this tidbit online:

Charles (IX of France) was married to Elizabeth of Austria on November 26, 1570. They had one child, Mary Elizabeth of France (October 27, 1572 – April 9, 1578), who died young.

Edited to say that it sounds like this piece commemorated the birth of their daughter.

Thanks folks. I passed your info on back to the question originator. Andy's response makes a lot more sense than my initial thought.
