Going to Cooperstown / We're Back !!

Well, It's been really slow as far as having jobs the last week or so.

I have been sitting home at least 3 of the 7 days per week for the last month or so, my wife has off this week I figure, roadtrip to Cooperstown.
Haven't been there in quite some time and I got the itch after pics posted on the forum .

Does anyone know if much has changed over there , anything I definitely can't miss ?

Does anyone have anything they would like me to see if I can take pictures of to post here on the forum ?

Thanks for any and all ideas . .

    i'm going this weekend (sunday) for cal's big day i haven't been there in about 17 years but before that i used to go every year for the inductions weekend, what a great weekend and i got tons of autos and memories that can't be replaced.

    anyone else going this weekend? can't wait to see the cards there, as i remember not many deals there for this weekend, but should be a lot of stuff, and different stuff.

    i hope we get good weather, an orioles induction is always packed up there (i've seen f. robinson and palmer inducted both packed houses) can't wait to see weaver.

    if you really want to see the hall and enjoy the village induction weekend is not the time to go.

  • I suggest stopping by the Fu Kin Chinese Restaurant(real place).I have never been inside but with a name like that how can you go wrong? There are a few good small restaurants outside of town but the names escape me right now. There is a card shop across the street from Doubleday Fields' parking lot that has an incredible selection of vintage singles and autographs from everyone from Ruth to Jeter.Everything there is authenticate by PSA,JSA or GAI.I believe the name of the shop is Yaz Sportscard or something like that.At A&E Sportscards across the hall from Yaz the will be having signings all weekend. If you are just looking to see some incredible memorabilia then I suggest National Pastime. They have a great selection of old Bats,Balls,Gloves and just about everything else you don't get to see very often if at all.If you are looking for more tourist type stores I suggest 7th Inning or Mickeys for jerseys, shirts, and hats.
    Thats all I can come up with for now>I will add more as I think of it.

    I just remembered there is another very large signing at the Tunnicliffe Inn from Fri.-Sun.

    Was just there last week , 1st time for me man what a place . loved every minute of it . The hall is incredible so much memorabilia to look at . We stopped at a place called Dimaggio`s hot dog for sandwich`s . i recommend it !!

    Parking is a nightmare , i suggest using one of the three parking lots , they have a trolley that takes you right to the front door of the hall . definatley check out Doubleday field , thats one cool ballfield . brings back the oldtime feel .

    If you like to watch little league play , check out the Dreams Park ... holy cow i must have counted 24 different ball fields with games going on every night of the week .

    And after all is done and you need an ice cream fix i suggest Barnyard swing mini golf they have the biggest soft serve cone i have ever eaten . What a great time i can`t wait to go back ...

    looking for 1988 Fournier estrellas stickers , 1985 Prism Jewel stickers , anything Jesse Owens .

    Im there 2-3 times every summer. There is a Jellystone campsite we go to that is only like 5 minutes from town. Great place to camp, especially if you have kids. For me, I just like to sit by the fire and drink a few beers. I'm going either next week or the week after...we'll see which week wont be raining or be high humidity.

    One other tip
    If you are not a member of the Hall of Fame I suggest you sign up while you are there
    Couple of reasons
    You get in free to the Hall - also go in a side door and earlier then the general public but most importantly --- Bathrooms
    There is a shortage of public bathrooms -- Doubleday Field -- the secret one at the Chamber of Commerce and the best is in the Hall trust me it will come in handy

    Hall of Fame Induction weekend is awesome! It use to be even better when all of the autographs were free. They use to have a couple of different signing sessions where all of the players would sign for free. If you didn't have anything for them to sign they would sign a Gold HOF plaque postcard and just give it to you. One of the signing sessions use to be for all ages and the other was for kids 15 and under. They also use to let you roam around the Motel where they stayed and even eat lunch with the players. Now you can pretty much get any of the players to sign but you have to pay for it. There are still a few ways to get free graphs. You can wake up very early and head down to the golf course. The regulars will pretty much show you where you need to stand. A couple of the tee boxes are very close to the road and often times the players will come over and sign. The other time to score a few free graphs is after the party on Saturday night at the HOF. They have a big party at the HOF and as the players are leaving (usually 11:00 or after) they will often times come over to the rope and sign. Also, you can sometimes get some autographs by recognizing the players on the street. You never know who you will see.

    i just realized that today is the 5th anniversary date of our final day of a fantastic week at Cooperstown Dreams Park.....pictured below is the team my son played with that week, he is third from the left, bottom row.....
    image
    our boys went undefeated, 7 and 0 that week and then got upset in the first round of the playoffs by a team ranked near the bottom of the standings, a heartbreaker for the #3 seed image.....the kid at the end of the bottom row left and the kid third from left in the second row are currently teammates of my son on his High School varsity team, and today they are playing their archrival from across town in a Summer League semifinal game....the winning team plays in the championship game on Sunday at the USC ballfield (Dedeaux Park)....it goes to show how far we've come since that summer, a truly unforgettable one....to any of you who can make it to Dreams Park, do it! there is nothing better than watching the kids play image

    Man ! what a whirlwind !
    I have never been to Cooperstown for induction weekend , that absolutely ROCKED !

    The first day we got there I met Rollie Fingers and Yogi Berra , they were doing some signings , that was cool {Rollie still has that same stash } we got their auto's on baseballs that my son had brought with him {We went with 10 in hopes to see many baseball players }

    I also took my 1932 Yankees team signed baseball because a few of my friends told me to take it to Tom Catal " Mickey Mantles signing agent@ Safe At Home Collectibles in Cooperstown to see if I could find out a little bit more about it and let me just say it was a " SHOW STOPPER " I almost felt famous , everyone gathered around and wanted to see it.

    He really couldn't give me any more information than I already know but he fell in love with the baseball and so did his staff in the shop , everyone in there was like " That is the nicest baseball I have ever seen in my whole life and look where I am "

    He says " My God this thing looks like it was just signed 10 minutes ago " and I had one gentleman offer me 40 grand for the baseball{But I have had higher offers than that }

    Tom said " If that was mine I really wouldn't care about where it came from or if I knew anything about it , as long as I had it" and I guess I feel the same in a way , But I sure would like to know the date it was signed and I wish they would have dated it .

    He explained that 40-50 grand is a good price , but @ auction you never know , it could go higher , a lot higher depending on who sees it , there could be a serious battle , he also explained how a lot of the auction houses bid it down , so he was very informative

    We spent a lot of time at the batting cages too , but we left late saturday because it was getting really really crowded and lines were just ridiculous , but I picked up a lot of really cool stuff and my son was just in his glory and already can't wait to go back . .

    Needless to say though . . . I'm BROKE ! image

    Thanks all, for the ideas of places to see, I appreciate it .
