Looking for 1996-98 Donruss/Score/Fleer sets, Finest 1996-97 (S & G), Flair 1994-95, & 1990,

Hi everyone! I could be looking at a windfall of card money soon (around $400-$500 most likely, possibly more; why is a long story) and I was wondering if anyone in this congregation can help me out with my wishlist as follows:

1983-86, 1990 Topps Send-In sets
1996-98 Donruss and Score sets (preferably all Donruss and/or all Score sets in one purchase)
1996-99 Fleer sets (preferably all in one purchase)
1996 and 1997 Finest silver sets
1994-96 Flair (with ALL 1993-95 insert sets)
1996-99 Ultra Gold Medallion sets

And the following Fleer insert sets:
1990 League Standouts
1990 Soaring Stars
1990 World Series
1991 Pro-Visions factory (the four Pro-Visions cards you only got in the factory set)
1993 All-Stars
1993 Glavine
1993 Golden Moments
1993 Major League Prospects
1993 Pro-Visions
1993 Rookie Sensations
1993 Team Leaders

And the following Ultra insert sets:
1994 Home Run Kings
1994 On-Base Leaders
1994 RBI Kings
1994 Rising Stars
1995 All-Rookies
1995 Golden Prospects
1995 Hitting Machines
1995 Home Run Kings
1995 On-Base Leaders
1995 RBI Kings
1995 Rising Stars
1995 Second Year Standouts

I know what I'll end up getting money wise will most likely not be enough to get EVERYTHING on this list, but I hope to cross off most of it at least.

Or, should I just forget about all this (for now) and go for either a 1975 (or 1974 if there's not enough for 1975) Topps set or Topps football set run (80s/90s) instead? image On the football set run however, my wife says I'd be crazy to start a football set run without first finishing my baseball set projects first (though BBCE's run of football sets does look good).

I DID list getting the 1975 or 1974 set as one of my options. And I HAVE dreamed of owning the 1975 set ever since I started collecting, though it is REALLY tough to find one in really nice raw condition. The only problem is, I've never spent that kind of money ($450+) on one set so I'm not sure I want to do that unless I'm absoultely sure it's among the best raw sets. Also, the super preminum sets I listed are nearly impossible to find on Ebay but are at least affordable (for the most part) when they do show up. I just figured it'd be easier to list ALL my ongoing projects.

Boy, wouldn't this be so much easier if I had like $2000 or something and could get everything? image

he's also mentioned the 74 and 75 set many times and it's in his list to choose from. with 'coming into' that kind of money he can get one of these sets. the other ones he can get pick up with his monthly 'card allowance' as Estil puts it. and besides I'd like to stop hearing about the 74 set - kidding.

Indeed, you do have a point about saving say, the Donruss/Score/Fleer sets for my standard allowance. OTOH, if it's something like say, those 1996 and 1997 Finest B/S/G sets I recently missed out on a few months ago or a big run of Ultra Gold Medallion sets, well, that's just as, if not more difficult to come across than a super nice 1974 or 1975 Topps set.

My wife is currently doing another "marathon" work session (she's a customer service rep from home); let's all cheer her on and show appreciation to the one that's making this Christmas in August possible for me! image

Very well. But who here (or elsewhere) has the very very best raw 1975 Topps set in as solid NRMT/MT condition throughout? If it helps any, I already have the Brett RC in PSA 7. I mean, if I'm going to spend this kind of money ($450; I doubt anyone would be crazy enough to offer a super top grade set for less than that) on one set, my favorite, I want to be 100% that I'm getting the very best one possible.

Why do you need to buy the very best raw 75 set out there? I think you would drive yourself crazy trying to find one. Heck, buy a wax box or three and try to put together a NM/MT raw set for that matter. As others have stated in the past, the best way to put together nice older raw sets is to buy a few of them, cherry pick, and re-sell the extra sets. From what you have said, the card allowance won't allow you to go this route. So with $500, you only have two options at this time: 1) work on your modern set run, 2) buy a run-of the mill, advetised as "very nice NM 75 set" for $350, and spend the rest on something nice for your wife. Forget about the perfect 75 set until you have the $$ to do it right.

Unless you are extremely lucky you will never find a true NM/MT set from 75 for $450.00. Most people who have a set of that caliber put it together by buying several lots or even card by card. So, chances are they are not going for $450.00.

To each there own, but a nice EX-MT to NRMT set presents well. Be careful about having caviar tastes on a potato chip budget.

    Whatever you decide good luck.

If you your set has a couple bunk cards, simply replace them rather than expecting the best of the best out of the gate.

Well, obviously a few miscut/off grade commons here and there are to be expected (which can also happen on modern sets, but much less frequently). I'm not expecting a perfect set by any means (there's no such thing; not even PSA 10s have to be perfect by PSA's own admission) but I do want to try my best to get my money's worth, especially if I must spend at or close to the $500 BV. I guess the only thing I can do is buy from someone (Ebay or otherwise) that has a solid reputation and experience with vintage sets, with good scans of the key cards and hope for the best. At least the 1974 set won't be so tough; it's much cheaper and it has the standard white borders that don't show wear like black/colorful borders do.

Or, if I get really lucky, maybe I can find a really nice set that excludes the Brett/Yount rookies (since I already have a PSA 7 Brett) and simply get a PSA 7 of Yount to go with it.

    put the set together yourself.

new england sports cards has a partial set missing only 40 cards (1 being the brett you have) these come from vending lots and are in nice shape.

Item number: 330148272069. i have bought a lot of psa 9 quality stuff for good prices.

then check with members here and you can finish it out in nm shape. i think we all have nice cards that are just not worth grading but look good in sheets and binders.

    ..........fab4..........
  • EstilEstil Posts: 7,231 ✭✭✭✭✭
Unfortunatley, we won't get the money in time for that lot (though it does look pretty good) but you think that dealer would be a good place for quality vintage stuff? And yes, I do store all my sets in binder/pages so obviously eye appeal in binder/pages is important. I guess realistically, I'm looking for a raw set that would grade around 7-8ish (in terms of corners/surface; I'm not very picky about centering as long as it's reasonable; you know, no miscuts or hairline borders). As for 1976-79, for some reason I've had great luck in getting a blazing 1978 set. I've had a previous run of 1976-79 but after foolishly selling the sets I bought some new sets to replace them. For some reason, the 1978 always was the strongest set condition-wise in both cases. Did Topps make extra good quality card stock that year?
