Yes, PCGS has graded several of them, they do exist and are quite valuable. There are even 1944 Steel cents.

If you check the Stack's and Heritage auction archives, you'll probably find some 1943 copper cents (and perhaps even a 1944 steel cent) and you'll be able to read about the coins' history and see what prices they sold for.

didnt find any 1943 coppers on ha.com but found a few 1944 steels that weren't even in pcgs or ngc holders (wonder why) anyways, I don't have an account to see how much they go for.

    1943 Copper sold in 2001 for $46,000
1944-D Steel sold May 30th, this year for $69,000

And I do reccomend setting up an account with Heritage, it's quick, and it's free - and it puts tons of valuable information right at your fingertips.

I agree all it cost you is learning another password. And the Archives of past auctions can be a big saver if you buy the wronge thing for the wronge price. And the photos are better than looking in the Red Book.

I believe there's a 43-D struck on copper that grades MS.

This is one of mine. I have two.
PCGS does not holder off-metal cents. Unless they have recently changed their mind. A 1944-D Steelie is offered at platinum night Heritage in milwaukee, the finest known. I would like to know if a copper 1943 is being offered... if anyone knows through whom...

I'm always in awe of these two varieties of Lincoln cents. Very historical.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

Goldberg sold four PCGS graded off-metal Lincons in February, 2003 - two copper, two steel:

I have no idea why I said that. I know of some 1944 steel cents in PCGS holders. image

Thanks for letting me know of the 1943 copper... Goldbergs always find a way to have some big rarity once in a while.

Might be PVC. I don't think the previous owner stored it correctly.

Lloyd, I think you should get yourself a 1974 aluminum cent to go along with your 1944 steelies.

I would buy one today if I could find one.

UPDATE: I saw the Larry Goldberg 1943 Copper cent. It is in a PCGS holder that simply says, "Genuine Copper". It is scratched pretty badly, on the obverse and the reverse, with a major scratch through Lincoln. The story goes some yound kid did not believe it was real, and scratched it to see if it was. What the scratch would find I have no idea. All he needed was a magnet of course. But not everyone knows what to do. Scratching the thing is NOT a recommended option. It is NET VF I guessed.

It is factual the Goldberg auctions will have ANOTHER 1943 copper for sale within a year.

I tried to bid on the 1944-D NGC Steelie at Heritage. I went to $80,000 bid, thinking even THAT was way too much. Legend (Laura) bought it for $115,000. They are startng to get the "recognition" of the 1943 Copper cents... Darn.

According to Hofmann, he is responsible for a few 43 copper cents, that made it into the collections of prominent collectors.

I wonder if his 43 copper cent wound up in a PCGS holder?

That would be a BIG story!
