Evidence of Trimming???

I just got back this 1958 Stan Musial with the dreaded "Evidence of Trimming". However, I know it hasn't been trimmed as I've owned it for the past 20+ years. It came in an old shoebox with numerous other cards that have received decent grades, so I highly doubt the original owner 20+ years ago trimmed this one card. I assume the "trimming" is on the left-hand side of the card. Can't this just be attributed to a rough cut? Do the graders just see a rough cut and immediately deem it as "Evidence of Trimming"?

  • I don't know if trimming was a common practice 20 years ago but I highly doubt it. I can only assume the grader thinks the rough edge was trimmed but I have cards this rough that clearly are not trimmed. Is this size of the card "correct"?

I don't know, it looks a little short from top to bottom. Did you measure it or hold it up against another card? Even if it is short, it might have just been cut that way at the factory.

Looks fine to me as well.....nice card.

I met Musial in Dallas about 15 years ago at a show with my father. I think he was charging $20 for a signed 8x10, then worth about $10, but it was very fair I thought, as Stan took the time to chat a little with me and shook both mine and my father's hand. I still have it in the decently cheap plaque we put it in at the show, but I don't think I have the free autograph guest that day anymore (Anyone remember Morgana the Kissing Bandit?)

I assume it's the correct size as it matches up perfectly with other '58 All-Star cards that I have that don't have rough edges.

It sure would be nice in cases like this for PSA to provide a little justification. Just a quick few lines as to what they saw and why they didn't grade it. Oh well, live and learn. I still like the card and love the '58 All-Stars.

Evidence of Trimming is being used awfully capriciously at PSA these days. I've gotten EoT's on several PSA crackouts and on cards I've pulled from packs. It would be nice if they would at least share this 'evidence' by circling the area on the outside of the CardSaver with a sharpie. Wouldn't cost them a dime. EoT has been mentioned in many, many threads lately - it is becoming a joke, albeit an unfunny one.

I sent a sheet cut 79 opc ozzie smith to beckett after psa called it eot, added it in to the rest of my submission to see what happens. I got this back from beckett with the card in the card saver. I'm sure it was a sheet cut but it was worth the $8 or whatever to get the description of why it was rejected.

Also the Musial looks trimmed on the top left above the word SPORT, I agree it looks a little short t/b if anywhere.

    I agree totally, Mike.

I've been burnt by it recently and my faith in PSA hit the $hitter because of it.

I think it will grade if you re-submit. I know its a pain, but what can you do?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
