Andy, since I grew up in Argentina, I am constantly looking for an excuse to do a coin show down there. There is a show in Buenos Aires every year, but from the comments I have received from some of my numismatically inclined friends, it is not worth doing, at least not for the time being. I may go down there and see what it's all about anyway, but won't set up. You can get info on the show from Miguel Pratt (NISA@pla.net.py) . He's a dealer that sets up at the FUN Show every year, and although he lives in Paraguay, he has his hand on the pulse of the numismatic community in Argentina.

If I could go to a coin show anywhere in the world, it would be in Buenos Aires! Great town!! Hope you end up making the trip and tell us all about it.

Try to get to the Mercado de Pulgas in the Palermo district in Buenos Aires. It's not really a show, but more like a flea market (in fact, this is what Mercado de Pulgas translates to). Lots of South American and Spanish coins there.

  • Andy, I believe that on the Avenida Corrientes (Corrientes Avenue) in Buenos Aires there is a "numismatic district." (Its been almost 2 years since I've been there). Like the Diamond District, there is an arcade with several dealer booths set up. Unless they have stuff in the back, the material that is in the shop is not all that attractive and the inventory displays were disorganized. If you were going to be in Argentina anyway it would be worth the trip, but don't make a special trip just for it. The numismatic museums were closed when I was there (January of 2006), but el Museo del Banco Provincial De Buenos Aires had a nice exhibit of Argentine coins and paper money.
