Steiner suing Big Papi

Ortiz' agent, SFX Baseball Group LLC, "did not immediately return a call for comment."

    LOL .

Personally . . . .I dislike like Steiner for so many reasons , it would take me a week to list it all .

    But , that's just me .

I will say this though, One quality in people I find disgusting is GREED!

I know he's in business to make money . . . no question, but come on ?

I'm surprised he's only looking for a mil though .

This is fairly clear. You sign a contract, you do what's in the contract. To so many athletes, they think they can flake on certain aspects of the deal because their agents find loopholes. I actually get pissed off because sports contracts work differently than any other legal contracts.

For instance, an NFL deal can be worth $50 million over 8 years, but only the first 3 years are guaranteed. Well, why in the hell don't you just sign a 3 year deal? You know there's a 90% chance you'll leave after the guaranteed years and try and get more. In basketball, a role player like Steve Francis can get paid $33 million for not playing for the team that traded for him, then get paid more by the Rockets for actually playing. I wish real life worked like this.

Even if I was a multi-billionaire, I can't imagine having the stones to sign a contract and not follow through.

In the NFL, unlike baseball, it's very rare to have a guaranteed contract for any period of time. That is to the benefit of the owners, certainly NOT the players. The "signing bonus" is offered in lieu of that instability. Pro football players deserve, with some exceptions, every dollar they get. Just ask one of these guys now testifying before Congress who can't get out of bed in the morning, due to the massive toll playing football takes on your physical and mental health (brain injuries). Baseball is another story, but pro football players deserve every dollar they squeeze out of the league. The NFL makes more money than any other sport but their track record on taking care of their own is very poor.

Whatever, you're missing my point. Whether you're the employer or emplyee, your only goal should be to honor the contract you sign.

On the contrary, I understood your point quite well.

But if owners can cut a player loose as soon as he's injured or otherwise rendered irrelevant, why shouldn't the player have the same kind of power? This is the system ownership obviously prefers (Read: no guarantred contracts), so it's in place for obvious reasons. They (the owners) like it this way for a reason, Lee.

So you're saying Ortiz can not honor his Steiner contract because the Sox owners can find loopholes?

My overall point is that if you sign a piece of paper and give your word, honor it. I guess my use of player contracts wasn't the most apt analogy.

    Agreed there.

But I certainly don't side with Papi on this one. So we certainly agree on that. A contract like the one he signed with Steiner ought to be honored, IMO.

Absolutely , if you agree to a contract, you should honor it , I'm not siding with Papi either .

I'm not giving Steiner any rave reviews either .

I'd sure like to hear why Big Papi didn't honor the contract though ?
