Look what I picked up at the Red Sox game tonight

I was standing in line for an italian sausage and beer when 'lo behold, I see this familiar looking, older guy sitting at the concession stand. Everybody was walking by him and didn't seem to notice who he was. I went and up to him and said "Luie"? Yes! It was El Tiante! One of my heros from childhood whose crazy corkscrew windup I tried to emulate (and messed up my ankle). Anyways, he was great. Took to time to talk to me, shook my hand, and gave me this.

He may not be a HOF'er, but to me, he always will be. image

You gotta love Tiant. He did everything humanly possible that a pitcher could do to try and win the Series in '75. If he strung together a few more great seasons he's a HOFer.

I grew up in LA but we still tried to imitate the Luis Titant pitching style. Very cool.

    That is GREAT !
I remember Mr Tiant and the way he used to look straight up in the air when he used to pitch , I always used to wonder to myself how he could focus on the plate after that ?
  • Nice...I assume a great crowd as always. I went to school no further than a ten minute walk from Fenway and went to numerous games. I have been to Fenway, Wrigley, and Yankee stadium; the other two are great, but when you walk into Fenway you almost feel as though you are walking into museum. Great auto, and feel free to post anymore.

He carries around pictures of himself?

Yeah, evidently he carries a handful of these whenever he's around the park for the fans. Was really surprised. I was going to have him sign the back of my ticket, but he pulled out one of these. Incidently, after I ID'd him, several people in line finally figured out who he was. Great guy.
  • thats very cool!
You should always carry a digital camera with you and you could
have gotten a photo with him, that would have been better!

Reading your post reminded me of a great memory and sent me searching through some old boxes. When I was a kid in the 70s I went back to Boston with my dad, he grew up there. We were at a restaurant and noticed Luis at the next table with some friends. My father tore off a piece of the menu and after apologizing for interrupting his meal asked him if he'd be willing to sign it for me, which he did without hesitation. I just dug through my old boxes and found that old menu--very cool! Unfortunately it has been folded and has started to fade quite a bit--wish I had taken better care of it when I packed it away so long ago. Anyway, thanks for bringing back this piece of childhood nostalgia to me image

The great Luis Tiant! Loved his delivery (and Gene Garber's too).

Luis has a stand on Yawkey Way called "El Tiante" where he sets up for about an hour before home games and signs for fans on most nights. So any time you want a fun experience, get to the park early, go grab a Cuban sandwich and get to say hello to Luis - he's a great guy and loves to chat with fans! He's kinda like Boog Powell used to do in Baltimore, but Tiant is still there almost every game!

Congrats on getting to meet a class act!
  • That is VERY cool.

Most old ballplayers are extremely approachable and friendly.

Had a similar meeting with Tony Oliva after his playing days, at a Twins game at the old Met. What a GREAT guy.

Thanks for sharing a TERRIFIC story.
