Spammers monitoring these message boards.

I thought board members would like to know that it appears spammers are monitoring even this obscure corner of the internet.

On the 14th I posted an item on these boards and included an email address for replies. The address had not been subject to spam in the past – probably because it was not published anyplace.

Within two days of the original post, the email account began receiving the usual internet spam, and the volume has increased day by day.

There are a lot of "bots" that crawl the internet looking for email addresses. There is some easy HTML code that you can put in your pages to build email addresses on the fly so the bots can't grab it. They are scum of the earth!

That really sucks. I know from experience that once an email address is "infected," that's it--will remain so until the day it dies.

On a perhaps happier and more coin related note, when is the third volume in your trilogy coming out? I await it with an anticipation similar to that with which I await the last Harry Potter release...which is to say quite a LOT!

Spammers, like cockroaches, are everywhere and pretty much impossible to eradicate.

Use Google Mail. I get the usual amount of spam to my Gmail address, but maybe 2 junk emails have made it past their filter and into my inbox in the last year.

I sent an email to Andy Lustig once, and I got an auto reply that said something like, "you are not on the approved list to send an email to this address. The owner of the mailbox will be informed and if you are approved, then your message will go through."

I wonder if that option is available for all email accounts.

I know that Earthlink has that option. It can be difficult to manage the list though, so I don't use it.

Trend Micro has a free spam filter (for consumer use only) that works pretty well.

Oh, and I do not have any financial interest nor do I get any financial gain from either of these companies. These are just products I use.
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

If you must publish your e-mail address, use (at) where the @ sign goes and see if the users are smart enough to make the substitution. This blocks the bots.

Mark - the book is with the printer and copies should be back in 4-6 weeks. There's no surprise ending like with the Potter book, and it contains no magical formulae for coin upgrades, although I admit to feeling a bit "Hagrid" after so much research - this has taken almost 8 years!

I will be dressing up like Roger Burdette and sleeping outside of Barnes & Noble on the night before this book comes out. image

rwb, you know sooo much coins but so little about the intertubes
    ;o)

bots crawl and get the email addresses from webpages as
    other have stated.

so when sharing an email address obfuscate it a bit.

like joe@lol.com will be joe at lol com and those who wish to
email the person will be able to figure it out.

if they guess wrong, they get a bounce back message in their
inbox saying user unknown on the remote mail server.

have a good day rwb, always enjoy your posts.

Give a fake e mail address. It hurts business, but it keeps the riff raff away !

Well, my email must be "infected". I've been bombarded with 15-20 e-card notifications a day since right before the 4th that all have a virus in it also. These get stopped by Postini and never reach my in-box.
