Advice needed for handling large ungraded collection

Greetings all, I would like to solicit advice for selling portions of a large, ungraded collection. My family has a large card collection from which they would like to sell certain sets and individual cards. The bulk of the cards are baseball and the bulk of these are either low grade '50s and a great deal of '64 and '65 Topps cards which are predominantly in good condition. I suspect that they are for the most part 5s or better. Here for example is a short incomplete list of what we have. A pretty good number (50 or so forgive me but I am still sorting through them all slowly) '64 Philadelphia football, '65 topps football, 2 large '90 and '91 NFL pro sets, , a few '61 and '63 fleer baseball, a few '61 Golden Press, '99 Jordan's greatest hits, '91 Score Set (nearly if not a complete set) Pacific Nolan Ryan '91- - etc. Just to give y'all an idea of the diversity of the collection. My question is, for the lower grade cards, and for cards that might only grade 5-8 or so, what would be the most advantageous method of selling these? Their condition nearly precludes grading for the lesser known players but surely there are buyers for these nice but lower grade cards. Let me thank in advance anyone who may shine a little light on this for me as I am obviously new to this. I thought that in my retirement that this might be a fun thing to do, and it has been, but it is now becoming a little complex. I had no idea that we had this many cards collectively. Once again, Thanks. Regards, Gene

  • Gene... can you post a few scans of some of the cards? You'll probably receive some good advice about how to sell the cards and may receive a few offers on some at the same time.
  • Absolutely. The thing is there are literally hundreds, probably thousands. Maybe post a few from each category do you think?

Most of the early 90s stuff is considered junk and you'll have a hard time moving, so I wouldn't even bother with those. For example, the 1990 and 1991 Pro Set sets would probably sell in the $5 range. The 50s and 60s stuff is always in demand, even at lower grades.

    Geno,

I am definitely interested in the low-mid grade ungraded 50s cards of any sort (football or baseball, commons or stars). ungraded PSA 2-4 are just fine by me! Send me a private message for more info.

    thanks, Jim

  • Good, one less thing. I'll post up a few examples from each group of the older stuff. I really appreciate the help y'all.

  • Great Jim, Do you have any card in paticular that you need or would you like a list of the ones they (we) want to sell. Unfortunately, I don't have one as of yet and it is lengthy. Regards, Gene

    Hi Gene,

Good luck with the sale. These guys are point on. The 90's stuff is near impossible to move. Team set builders and maybe Player sets for them but again the value is rock bottom.

50's and 60's football is picking up and will sell well in lots. I would spend the time scanning now when putting them in lots.
  • Great suggestion. Scan them all in you think?

  • Gene- I'm interested in 52 Bowman baseball/ 1960 Topps baseball if you have any to scan. Also any 1964 philadelphia football Packers that you might have.
It probably would be a good idea to scan a few from a bunch of different years, trying to give us an average condition of the cards and then let any poster contact you for a specific yr/card etc
I agree with the others on the newer stuff, unless someone contacts you on the recent cards, I wouldn't post scans.

    Nice looking cards.

I'll give you $10 for all the ones in the two scans. imageimage
  • I know for sure I have Hornung, Starr (he's at PSA a 5, go figure, thought he looked great) Jerry Kramer and it seems like a couple of more, I'll look. Willie Davis, Jesse Whittenton also.

  • Right on. I'll keep scanning and posting 1 example from each year and then, I'll seperate and scan by year. I need a secretary. Do they still have those?

The key cards are pretty worn, but they will find a buyer - just be sure to do scans of fronts (and backs if possible, depending on the card) with a thorough description. Things like the '50s stars, the Clemente rookie, that sort of thing.

Hey, if you've got beat up Milwaukee Braves I would be interested also along with the Packers.
  • Unfortunately, that seems to be the case with the bulk of the '50s cards with the exception of a few '56. Not many are as beat up as the '55s and earlier but they are predominately lower grades. But there an amazing number (maybe 200 or so from each year) of '64 and '65 cards that are for the most part looking pretty good. I'd say 90% of those two years will make 5 - 8. Some excellent '65 Topps football and a pretty good lot of '64 Philadelphia football. I guess the kid stopped playing with them in the '60s. That is when I started changing my interest as well!
