Pete Rose cards to be included in new Sportskings set

Here's the text of the Sportsking newsletter:
The Wait Is Over!
For nearly 20 years, card collectors have waited for a trading card manufacturer to include Pete Rose in a major release. It took the return of Sportkings to make it possible. Sportkings and Pete Rose. Two legends unite in the most exciting trading card release in years. Here are the facts that all collectors need to know.
· 1989, is the last time Pete Rose appeared in a major trading card release
· 1986, is the last time Pete Rose had autographed cards in a release
· Never, has Pete Rose had a game-used memorabilia card
All that is about to change in Sportkings Series A.
Pete Rose is undeniably a phenomenal talent who impacted the game of baseball through three decades. Known to fans as baseball's all-time leader in hits, he was a hero to millions due to the consistency and passion he brought to playing the game every day.
Rose's resume is loaded with an amazing array of on-field accomplishments and few players could come close to matching his longevity in the sport. His career began with the Cincinnati Reds in 1963 where he was named the National League's Rookie of the Year. Two years later, he began his path to stardom with his first of 15 seasons in which he would bat over .300.
Pete Rose Base Card
A key cog in Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine", Rose's drive resulted in four National League pennants for the Reds and two World Series titles. The 1975 recipient of the National League's Most Valuable Player honors, he joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1979 and won another World Series a year later. He joined the Montreal Expos in 1984 but returned to Cincinnati mid-way through that year to act as a playing manager.
In this new role, Rose secured his place in sports history by breaking Ty Cobb's record for most career hits as he reached base safely for the 4,192nd time. He would retire from active play at the end of the 1986 campaign and stayed on as manager until the end of the 1988 season. It was around this time that he was investigated for gambling allegations that ultimately resulted in the sport banning him for life.
Pete Rose Sportkings Autograph Card
Despite Major League Baseball's stance on Rose's transgressions and a retirement filled with controversial moments, there is ultimately nothing that can take away from his achievements on the field. There is a lot of debate as to whether or not he should be reinstated and allowed into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Collectors of sports memorabilia still have a soft spot in their hearts for "Charlie Hustle" and his signed items are always strong sellers. Rose's absence from the card market over the past 20 years has created a consistent demand for his cards.
"A tribute to Pete Rose is long overdue," said Sport Kings LP President Dr. Brian H. Price. "It's only fitting that a player of his stature would appear in our premier release."
Not only will collectors be able to obtain a card of Rose in packs of Sportkings, but they will also have a chance to obtain certified autographs and game-used memorabilia cards. Collectors have waited far too long and finally the wait is over.
Pete Rose Hats Off Memorabilia Card
The Sportkings name goes back to 1934 and is one of the most popular trading card releases of all time. The original release contained athletes from a variety of sports and the new product will capture the spirit of the landmark set with some of the greatest athletes in the history of sports. Does Rose deserve to take his spot among the greatest athletes? Certainly, but it is sure to generate a lot of discussion among collectors and dealers who are eagerly awaiting their chance to find one of their heroes in a pack of cards once again.

how can a player who is banned from baseball, appear on MLB licensed cards...
i dont want my child colecting Peter rose cards, thats for sure!
his post player life is and example of how not to live...
the idea of a rose auto is tainted due to his recent "insriptions"---very low class....
to each his own, but i for one will boycott these cards because of the inclusion of Rose...
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

They're NOT licensed by MLB, hence no team logos, etc...
I don't know. I think's it's kinda cool to see some new Rose cards at long last. As was said earlier, the Hall is one thing, but I don't think there's any harm in remembering or commemorating, in this way, what a great player he was. It's just his picture on a piece of cardboard, after all. Nothing to get too worked up about, I don't think.
They're not (MLB) licensed, Fandango. They don't need to pay the MLB the 6% or 7% of revenues to stick a logo on the card.
I have never been a huge Rose fan but I if my son used him as a role model for approaching the sports he participates in with passion and intensity, I would be thrilled.
One thing we know, there will be two gamblers in the first series, Hellmuth and Rose. But gambling only tainted one of them.

his responses/denials/change of stories is old....
his continued defiance and irreverance for baseball is appaliing...
"I'm sorry is shot JFK" ball is the epitome of his classlessness...
its too bad, this would have been a really cool set without Rose....
Shoeless Joe Jackson was also banned from baseball, right?
Also for gambling charges?
Yet he has appeared on quite a few licensed baseball cards in recent past. He had base card and/or insert cards in sets like:
1999 Upper Deck Century Legends
2001 SP Legendary Cuts
2002 Sweet Spot Classics
2004 Sweet Spot Classic
2005 Cracker Jack Baseball Legends
Is there a statute of limitations allowing Joe into major sets since his ban was so long ago--yet Pete can't be on official cards because his ban is more recent? I am just curious.....
p.s. I am all for Pete having cards commemorating his days as a player--He was a great player.
Akbar -- Hope someone here has an answer to that. Great question.
<< <i>Wasn't it the Mick who gave Pete his nickname "Charlie Hustle?" >>
Whitey Ford did that.

Very interesting. I have absolutely no idea and hope this doesn't get lost in the banter.
<< <i>Here's one everyone missed? What set in 1986 did Pete have an auto card in? I am CORNFUSED! Mike >>
That was a 120 card boxed-set that Renata Galasso made. Pete autographed a limited number of the first card in the set.

Many decades of uppers, downers, drugs, drinking, wild women, fighting, cursing, steriods, gambling, in the locker room on the road, ...and who knows what else? Our so-called sports heros/our so-called role models for our kids, had a lot to answer for, but mostly, I guess they just didn't get caught, or nobody knew, or possibly nobody really gave a rats @$$ back then, and maybe we all just looked the other way?
Pete Rose has been wizzed-on long enough!
Few players played the game like him! He was a big part of baseball's history, while his gambling was just a footnote!
Just maybe when you go to the Hall with your kids, and look at a possible Pete Rose exhibit there, u can then explain to your kids that few played the game as well as Pete Rose. "Son, Major League Baseball delayed Pete's entry into the Hall of Fame for gambling." (Let's stop sugar-coating our sports heros, and let our children know the good and bad about things!)
Big deal! Enough is enough already! (BTW, those are cool looking Rose cards! Look forward in seeing the whole set!)

P.S. I use my Pete Rose Topps Coin as a "card protecter" when I gamble & play Texas Holdem Poker at the Hard Rock!

<< <i>Holy crap rbdjr, I played with you briefly about a month ago at the Hard Rock when I was on vacation! I remember the Rose coin. It was a 2/5 NL game when they had that ridiculous $100 max buyin rule because of all the stuff going on with the state. I was a younger guy in the 9 seat- the guy in the 10 seat (heavy-set African American kid) had like $1700 in front of him, which was ridiculous at the time because the buyin was only $100. Have they fixed that yet?
Lee >>
Lee,
Was I winning, or was I a donkey?
They have not fixed it yet! Hopefully, they will raise the buy-in to $ 500 or $ 1000 in no limit Texas hold em games? I usually play the daily multi-table NL tourneys, and single table "sit and go" tourneys ($250, $520 or $1050 buy-ins).
Right now, that's the best we have here in South Florida. The Seminole Indian Nation will get it right, and The State of Florida will go along with them. Baby steps!
Lee, I'm so sorry I didn't get to talk with you. It would have been fun!
