A newbie Psa grading question...

Hello, only post number five or so but Im trying. My question is as collectors/dealers do you think you get worse grades because you missed some kind of cornerwear (sp?) or centering or maybe even some sort of print defect. I guess to be more specfic I would like to submit a handfull of cards and was wondering which of the above areas (if any) I should focus on more? From your experiences are the graders sticklers on certain things as opposed to others? Thanks

I'm not an expert myself, but in general you're going to want to look for sharp corners, centered centering, and no print defects if you're shooting for a PSA 10. I'd definitely recommend corners and centering over print dots or "fish eyes" though . . . with that said, the dreaded and often undetectable surface wrinkle will get you an automatic PSA 5 so be on the lookout for those as well.

AMEN to that! I had a Yount rookie and Sandberg rookie that I sent in during the March special and they both came back as a 5 due to surface wrinkles. I would have sworn the Yount was an 8 and the Sandberg a 9.

surface wrinklers are killers...pretty sure my 86T Traded Bonds fell victim to it...I was expecting a 9, got a 5.

to answer your question though - if there is a noticable ding in one of your corners or edges, it's an automatic 8...

at the end of the day, if you are going for 10s, everything needs to be perfect...centering, sharpness of edges/corners, focus, no print defects like fish eyes.

You need to get yourself a 10X loop (lighted if possible) for magnification of the corners. Your submission pile will dwindle once you start looking at those corners close up.
  • I just popped latest submission and had two `89 Score football come back as "questionable authentication". I pulled both cards from factory sets.

    Confused...

#1 mistake most make is with CENTERING. PSA is notoriously picky about centering.

I always check corners looking at the front of the card as well as the back.
