Per Request - One of my oddest music sets

I was requested to post some pictures of my oddest music related set. This set is both disturbing and funny to me. I still shake my head when I think about how popular they were in the late 70s. This set was issued in 1979. The following are some of the cards.

I remember going to their movie when I was a little kid (Can't Stop the Music?). Didn't know what to make of it.

Reminds me of a trip to the bleachers at Yankee Stadium with a bunch of my college buddies wearing our Red Sox caps. When they played YMCA, all of the Yankee fans circled around us and sang "Why Are You Gay?". Quality giggles.

I think those cards are from the Rockstars set- VP Queen Baby's Kiss I have a sweet box of these stashed away in a closet....no pun intended. I bought it a long time ago to get the Kiss cards, but never opened it. Mike

That is some seriously funny Sh**. I laughed and laughed as I was scrolling down. I think I must have saved about 6 of those scans for future jokes.

Thanks for sharing those, that was too funny

One more and I am heading off to bed.

You can't stop the music, nobody can stop the music.

Take the cold from snow, tell the trees, don't grow,

tell the wind, don't blow, 'cause it's easier.

No, you can't stop the music, nobody can stop the music.

Take the spark from love, make the rain fall up

    'cause that's easier to do.

i wasnt around back when they were popular, but.. were their outfits specifically designed to make them look gay, or did they actually think it was making them macho or something?

Most embarrassing profession - Ex-lead guitarist for the Village People.
  • I found this on wikipedia.com:

"The band was assembled in 1977 by Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, specifically to showcase and perform their disco music creations. The original ad for recruiting the group was "Macho Types Wanted: Must Have Moustache" and was placed by Jacques Morali in 1976. Much like Frank Farian's Boney M or The Spice Girls, the group was manufactured. Despite the French songwriters, the songs were all in English.

The band's name references New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood, at the time known for having a substantial gay population. Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo got the inspiration for creating an assembly of American man archetypes based on the gay men of The Village who frequently dressed in various fantasy ways."

Regarding the set, MetalMike is correct. The cards come from the Rockstars set issued in 1979 by Donruss. The set featured cards of Kiss, Queen, Village People and The Babys. Here is a sampling of some of the other cards:

Funny you brought up Blondie. While my friends were into the Charlies Angels (I liked Kate Jackson), I had posters of Debbie Harry all over my room. I had a hugh crush on her.

Thought this might be of interest to all the Village People fans. image

    Renaissance

The Village People as you've never seen them before!
You probably thought the Village People packed it in after disco was declared dead. Not quite -- producer Jaques Morali had one more try at it, updating the Village People into some kind of nightmarish techno-pop band for this unfortunate 1981 release, Renaissance.

Like Boy George run amok, the once dignified Village People dress up like you've never seen them before. Look carefully: those men in the ridiculous outfits were once the Cop, the Indian, and the construction Worker we all came to know and love.

Despite their producer's efforts to remake the Village People, some of the tracks on this release retain that classic Village People pop sound. Still others attempt to mix in the new sounds of the 80's with the old sounds of 70's disco -- a combination that doesn't always work as well as planned.

I DO NOT own this one. image

But I do remember seeing this in many of the discount bins back in the day for 25 to 50 cents. Probably worth at least 10 cents today. image

  • And I wonder why people thought they were gay...image
