UPDATED: Placed my BBCE order last night. W/PICS

I want to buy some packs/or boxes to OPEN not to keep. Any thoughts... I am thinking some 75 topps baseball, some 78 topps baseball, and some assorted football packs. What do you think?

If you can find some '75 unopened for that amount, let me know - I'm in.
I have fun opening mid-80s stuff; 85 Fleer, Donruss, etc. - good luck!

The 75 and 78's would be single packs or cellos. Maybe a few boxes of 86 Topps Baseball!!

I'd pick up a box of 1986 Topps Football from the Baseball Card Exchange for $375.00. Centering is ridiculously tough. But if you are able to somehow get past that, then there is a better than likely chance of chipping.

1975 racks have been closing around $200 on ebay lately. I like the 1983 Michigan packs too. Avoid 1974 like the plague.

    I'd buy 78, 79, 81, 82, 83, 84, or 86 football.

Basketball, might try to hit a bird/magic RC in the 80/81. Or maybe some 88/9 ( I think 87/8 is overrated)

I don't really see the appeal of the 75 baseball pack (or set for that matter) is there something I'm missing ?

Don't waste your time. Buy one nice vintage card. You won't regret it.

At $90 on the 75's you might have a point.

81 Topps FB packs are only 14 as well.

Maybe up my count on 81 84 86 FB???

As for the one vintage card... I have plenty of those and wanted to have alittle fun. I am not really looking for RC pulls or gradable cards. All though that would be an added bonus. Plus I dont collect Footbabl and have been thinking of starting some raw sets and this might push me over the top.

I would also look into 1989 score football, abunch of great rookie cards in those packs (even though you not looking for Rc's, there are some nice ones in this set, set isn't that big, a lot of HOfers)
    packs arent expensive, either.
I would probably up the 86 fb before I did the 81s, just because the 86s have Rice, Young, Smith, White, Reed (potential) as the nice HOFer rookies, and in 81 you just have the Montana and Monk (hopeful). Plus the 86 you now have shots at elway, marino, dickerson, allen, lott, taylor, moon that you didnt in 81. Plus the 86 packs are cheaper I think?

I agree with that too , But pack rippin is a lot of fun , especially the oldies as I'm sure you know .

I'm gonna do a little vintage hunt in a week or two , I get so excited I feel like a little kid image
  • Why gamble on the '75 packs? If you have a limited budget of 300-400, don't gamble. Go ahead and buy a centered PSA 8 Brett and Yount. You can get them combined in the $200 range.

    Lynn $25
    Rice $35
    Carter $65
    Hernandez $15

All those cards above will cost you appx $350 in PSA 8....which is less than the price for two rack packs. You can get all the big rookies from the set.

The moment you buy the packs and open them up to find a bunch of off centered commons, you will be dissapointed if you were on a limited budget.

Buy the cards you want, and you will be happy in the end. If you want to gamble, bet on black and be done with it.

But what fun is that? '75 packs do offer a great bang for the buck and there are low pop 9s and 10s that pull more money than even a PSA 8 Brett and Yount combined. If you really want a PSA 8 Brett RC, then by all means, go buy one, there certainly won't ever be a shortage of them for sale, but the thrill of opening an authentic pack and pulling a star card (or even a mint common) is what makes this hobby fun in the first place! If you want to invest soundly, buy some shares of Exxon or Apple. The cards I pull and send in to PSA are always more significant to me than the ones I buy already graded, especially if you're building a set. Go for it!

Stay away from cellos, though, if you plan on opening the packs! The cards in cello packs are highly prone to dinged corners because the cello wrap on Topps packs in the mid to late 70s was very tight. Your best best is wax (from a trusted source) or racks. For $350-$400, you can get 2 '75 racks (84 cards) or about 10 wax packs (100 cards). '78s are more affordable. Racks go for about $35-$40 each. Last night, two full boxes of 1979 racks sold for about $450 each I recall.

at $90 apiece, 75s seem like a very high risk pack to open. Even though there are low pop 9s and 10s, the reason they are low pop is they are really tough to get in that condition. I don't like to spend $90 on ONE pack, when the odds are I will get $5 in commons. Spend that $90 in '89 score fb packs, 84 topps fb, 86 topps fb, any ohter early 80s fb, you are almost guaranteed a few real real nice hofers and probably hof rookies as well.

I agree with the folks who are saying to buy one nice vintage card. Buy yourself a nice Mantle, or someone else that makes you happy.

You'll appreciate that card much more than a bunch of commons with gum stains on them.

Let us know what you decide to do.

I was going to get a couple boxes of 86 BB but didnt. I always get a box of those with my orders. I like the set and they are so hard to find in mint condition it makes for a great and CHEAP rip. Next time I will get a few again.

That is definitely true, but there are great pulls out there. The last rack I opened yielded a mint and well centered Brett RC...it's at PSA right now. A nice authentic 75 rack will typically yield a nice number of PSA 9 quality cards with a couple potential 10s, too. The 75 mini packs are a better bargain IMO (legit packs fo for about $40 each) as they have many more low pop cards and the set is in high demand right now. They contain just as many cards (10) as the regular size packs, too.

I received order and had alot of fun but didn't hit much at all. The 78 BB was terrible a total waste. The 81 FB were also bad. The 84&86 FB were in great shape and had some nice cards as well. I probably got 20 gradeable (9-10) type cards from the 86 packs alone. I had fun ripping , and will probably do it again when I get the itch.
