what are your thoughts on this one, wiped? (NEW PICS ADDED)

I'm hot to trot for this AU Vicky, but fear that it has taken a wipe from 2 - 8 o'clock. I emailed the seller and will see what he/she says, but is anyone seeing what i'm seeing?

another (or ten!) set of eyes doesn't hurt!

thanks!
Doug

I think not. Try opening the photo and use the negative effect on it - I saw no wipe lines.

  • wiped or not you''ll see a lot more hairlines in person than this pic. I don't like the hairlines from "T" to mouth and across neck.

It may have some but since it is AU I think I would be OK with it - could be regular (light) circulation marks.

Whatever you see and are suspicious of doesn't show up real clearly in the images- nice looking coin. In hand things may be different but your pics don't scare me.

Hairlines look fairly random to me. Was probably just in someone's pocket for a while. Parallel or circular hairlines are what I look for when deciding if a coin has been cleaned or not.
  • Gene... When you say use the negative effect in photoshop is that the invert function?

Could you explain how you do that to look for hairlines?

    AlaBill -

Here is the above picture using the Negative Effect filter in MS Photo Editor (I do not have photoshop). Note how areas that are difficult to see due to light reflection (or refraction?) and brightness show up as discolored areas. I still don't see anything that jumps out at me as being wiped. The coin has seen some circulation as indicated in the close up of Vicky. It is possible I am seeing evidence of clashed dies.

whoa! very cool technology Gene! coin collecting of the 21st century!
  • Using Adobe Photoshop, you Adjust Levels, ( Ctrl+L gets you there fast ), then change Output Levels from (0 - 255) to (255 - 0).

The effect helps to detect what you would otherwise miss, because white is turned black and black is turned white.

Here's another example where the effect can be quite impressive. Note how scratches become more pronounced.

To me it looks like it has been cleaned (maybe a long time ago) and later retoned.

  • Gene and IloiloKano... thanks for the tips on this technique. It looks very helpful on some coins.

It's amazing what you learn around here. Thanks all...

OK, I wear glasses but near-sighted vision is good. It looks to me like areas of field damage to left AND right of devices that have been hairlined in an attempt to "smooth" them. The seller's followup photos tend to confirm this point....
