If PCGS were to receive a mint sealed coin....and by accident one of the employees at PCGS were to damage the coin while in the process of taking it out of the case....what would the next procedure be by PCGS???? would they immediately notify the coin owner/submitter???? would PCGS slab it at a lower grade due to the damage???? send it back to the owner and pretend like it came from the US Mint damaged???? or you tell us????
your insight is always helpful.....
thanks
Eric

Hi Eric,
In the extremely rare instance where a coin is damaged while being handled by PCGS as part of the normal grading process, we always notify the submitter immediately and attempt a prompt resolution. It is possible that the coin could be encapsulated at a lower grade, depending on the type and severity of the problem. In such a case, the submitter would receive the coin back plus the difference in value between a damaged and an undamaged coin. Yes, we own up to our mistakes, which is why the PCGS brand is so respected in the marketplace.
