First card show in YEARS- Vets Memorial Cbus, OH

well i went to my first card show in years. It was the largest show ive ever been to! It had 150 tables and admission was free. THe first thing i noticed was that there was TONS of vintage, and very little modern stuff. The 2nd thing I noticed was that it was ALL collectors grade, raw, and priced like it was PSA worthy (which is wasnt). It was good just to see the demographics of the hobby though, which included men older then 20 and kids who were only there with their collecting fathers. Overall it was a great experience but if ya want investment quality cards, ya got to stick to ebay.

    Hey Loth -

I posted last week asking if anyone was going. I live just east of Columbus.

You nailled the show. Lots of good stuff for collectors. There were a few tables with vintage graded stars but I didn't even check prices. True, most of the EX+ 50's and 60's stars are marked high, but I have made many a deal and felt I got as close to ebay pricing as possible, and had the card to look at to boot. I bougt a 56 Aaron from the first table on the left when you go in - Wayne Johnson. It's 7-worthy of I know anything about card condition. Perfectly centered too. On a really bad day I could see a 6, but 9 out of 10 times it would get a 7. 6's sell for almost 200, and 7's closer to 400-500. I paid 240, so I don't think you could ask for more than that.

I did notice one thing about the show. The oldest unopened material you could find was 2006. I'm really contemplating buying 5K worth of 70's and 80's wax/cello from BBExchange and setting up there next time.

I think you have to look in the cheap boxes and you can find high grade 50s/60s commons, you can't look at the higher priced star cards in the showcases cause you wont find good deals on high grade cards that way.

Also, hi-grade complete sets from the 70s and 80s can be good deals, even at full book. All you need is a couple 10s out of a set to make your money back. For whatever reason, people stopped buying complete sets at shows about 15 years ago and they've just sat.

There are a few good sellers at that show. I tend to buy from the same ones each time. There are also overpriced dealers of graded & ungraded cards. They have the same cards on their table show after show. Today I picked up a 1955 Agganis PSA 7 for $100. Looks like it could have been an 8 except for centering. Also purchased a 1955 #171 PSA 6 for $15. Both have already been added to my registry set. This is the only show in this area I know of that has a good selection of vintage.

That card is notorious for its centering.
