FS: 1969-S DDO PCGS AU-58...just acquired

I just acquired a PCGS graded AU-58 1969-S DDO. PCGS has mistakenly designated the coin as RED (2923.58/xxxxxxxx) whereas it's a brown and should have been designated 2921.58/xxxxxxx. In any case, there is still red remaining around the obverse rims with considerable cartwheel and within the Lincoln Memorial on the reverse. No scratches as on the Lukes specimen, and I know many of the Registry forum participants may have an interest. Most of the top sets are missing this date. Sorry, no photos yet.

If interested, e-mail me at iras4@aol.com and include your phone no. I have my Blackberry with me and I'll get right back to you. It's not cheap but priced fairly for what it is and its rarity. Definitely needed for the Memorial set with varieties.

Sure. At my office now, so here's the photo: This is Die 1, the real thing, not the deceptive machine doubled examples sold for hundreds of $$ and slabbed by grading companies that are less than reputable. (not the top 4)

I don't think my PCGS e-mail link is working. If you wish to e-mail about this coin, try:

    Ira,

Please share the original asking price (was it 40k?) and the subsequent selling price (real close to that?) with us so we have another data point to help us understand where the current market for these are (since there are so few).

    Thanks,

    Roger

I have been looking at this exact coin for over 2 years.

The dealer who owned it found it in circulation...yes paid 1c for it. he found it about 3 years ago...assuming his story is legit (and I think it is).

He'd been asking $35K CASH only for the coin, and wouldn't budge off that number. I made him an offer a few hours before Ira bought the coin that was cash only and damn close to the asking price. He passed.

My guess, and only a guess, is that the coin sold for around the ask, if not on the number.

Another AU58 PCGS specimen changed hands at the first Baltimore show this year for a slightly higher level.

That should give you a market update!!!

    James,
If you REALLY wanted that coin for two years and you had an opportuniuty to acquire it, why in the world didn't you pay him the few extra bucks he wanted? In this hobby you have to weigh your desire against the assumed need to negotiate.

As a dealer, I have to weigh how much money I put into a deal on speculation vs the return.

It had nothing to do with negotiation. Those who i buy from know if I can make money on a coin, I don't quibble, I just buy.

In this case I was putting a $35,000 coin in inventory, which this guy had been displaying for 2+ years at major shows. He hadn't sold it, so why should I be able to get a premium jsut because I bought it. OK maybe I'd market it a little better, but what would have been realistic? $3,000 profit, and when would i have realized that?

Take the spouse gold coins. $50,000 investment, $40-50,000 return in 6-8 weeks. I'd rather have free money for those deals than speculation on a cool coin to make $3k on it.

    Just business!!!

    James,
I'm sorry. I misunderstood your motivation here. I thought you wanted this rare coin for your personal collection, at least for awhile. With your explaination, I can fully understand why you passed on the deal. Thanks for providing it.

Anyone have any other data points (for PCGS AU58's) BETWEEN the Louis Mo $25k eBay sale, the one Mitch Wondercoin had that he wanted near (a little less than) $25k, and the current near $40k sale? image

Anything to suggest a 60% up trend over time as opposed to a 60% spike up?

If oyu look back at Bowers Baltimore sales, i believe there was one sold about 2 years ago. It sold (I think) for around $35K with the juice. this was the basis of the asking price of the coin in question.

Typical seller, wants ALL the money with no consignment fee. i can't say i blame the guy, as he had more money in plastic fees than in the coin. he knew a buyer would eventually come along.

My philosophy would be, sell it at $32K, take that money and buy more coins, then it would have turned into more than $35K in 2 years. But that's just my way of doing business! Sell coins and have fresh inventory.

Yes, I did own an PCGS-AU58 for a few weeks. Flipped it and moved on. Missed a big chance to try to buy the PCGS-MS64RB when it sold for around $40k at auction a couple years ago (I was fixated on another lot and simply missed it when I saw it being auctioned off at (IMHO) a fire sale price) - but, probably I would have simply run the coin up as I doubt the winning bidder would have stopped at the $40k.

The 69 DDO is clearly one the greatest "modern" coins in existence.

Neat variety-pretty coin. The price is too steep for my shallow pockets. Maybe one day I will pick one up out of change also. image

Very low pop of 1 in AU58 RD, 5 in 58 BN. Only 23 total graded by PCGS and 9 total in BN by NGC.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
