Question on shipping to Canada

Buyer requests shipping total for a set to Canada, so I go to usps website, put in Canada for destination, 7 lbs, and click next and all it shows me are priority and express mail options. Did they eliminate air parcel post?

This seemed to be the cheapest way I saw to send a 7 pound package.

    Priority Mail International Rate: $23.80
Max Dimensions: Max. length 42", Max length plus girth combined 79",
    Max Weight: 66
    Service Commitments: 6 - 10 Days

Air PP is gone. A package can be sent 1st class, but the weight limit is 4lbs. You have to use priority mail with the large Customs form, not the little green one.

Shipping large packages (over 4lbs) has become cost-prohibitive using any of the common carriers - USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL. All surface options using USPS have been eliminated.

Thanks for the info. What a pain!

Unless the item fits in a priority mail envelope. You can now send one of them anywhere in the world for a flat rate of like $12.50, give or take a quarter, can't remember exact.

I sell meteorite books from time to time and this seems the better option for that type of mailing.

last month for me to ship a 200.00 card to canada would have cost 22.00. The buyer requested I say it was a 40.00 item. I charged him 8.00 total and did his request. The item gets to him and he begins crying that I overcharged him 5.00.

I tried to explain to him that i self insured it. If it did not arrive was he going to tell paypal to give him 40.00 or 200.00?

How could I insure it for 200.00 yet declare 40.00? Guy moaned and moaned . NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED.

I also say in my auctions that i ship only to the US. I do not ship to Canada simply because of the expense.

    Good for you.
  • lots of deep pocketed Canucks north of the border .....you may want to do your homework before you cancel their bids. Just don't offer insurance and and the items would be sent regular mail and to be understood at the buyers risk. If you're worried of the paypal consequence's .... just add MO's only, something like newenglandsportscards

There's many knowledgable sellers that routinely ship north of the border that actually thrive on the Canadian bids.

Ive never cancelled a canadians bid and if emailed and asked I say yes. It was just funny how this one buyer wanted me to declare his 200.00 item as 40.00 then when I self insured it for 5.00 (saving him 17.00) and the customs, he charged me with gouging him. I would have had to put up the entire 200.00 if the item did not make its way to him. Not the 40.00 he requested I declare his item at. I tried to explain that to him to no avail. As far as he was concerned he paid 5.00 and the PO did not insure it.

  • One card via regualar USPS will cost you $1.00 +/- to ship to Canada, so you charge $3.00 and the buyer assumes all the risk / 99.8 % of the buyers will take their chances.

    1 - mail is generally 99.8 % efficient anyways
2 - no customs delays, no extra fees
3 - buyer is happy, with the low postage and quick shipping
    4 - i'll guarantee you he'll be back looking for more .............

geez. well like I said NO good deed goes unpunished. the buyer in question has bombarded me with PM's claiming i outed him here.

Looking over my posts I do not see where I outted anyone.

Anyone know what I am even talking about?

    Steve

Edited to add: I mis read the PM he thanked me for not outting him, just did not like me 'bad mouthing' him

I always thought it was against he law to falsify that Canadian customs form. image

It is. however, being a card how can they prove its real value? the value is what we put on it.

    yes?

or, you charge 8.00 and the seller assumes the risk.

How did you bad mouth him when you just stated the facts and you didn't mention his ebay id or give us the auction linky?

I hear what your saying Steve. You try to do a guy a solid and it's not appreciated.

My post office requires me to attach a customs form to every package regardless of value. I'm not sure that is legal, but that's what they want and I'm not planning on driving to a different post office to mail out items.

So while Jomer says I can mail something to Canada for about a dollar, my post office charges slightly more and you have to use a customs form.

Lot's of good hoser buyers up North though.
  • "or, you charge 8.00 and the seller assumes the risk."

    image

well now you know why he's crying about the $5.00

    also....
they say it's illegal to falsify customs documents ??? well yes .... but guess who made up the law ?? Basically it's a way for the goverment to generate more revenue through tax's. I think the magic number is actually $20.00 anything under they don't bother with, and anything over get's taxed. That's why buyers will state to keep the declared value low or marked as a gift.
Most experienced sellers do this automatically for the repeat biz. I've dealt with newenglandsportscards out of MA .... and dispite all their shortcomings > mark everything as a gift valued at $5.00 (don't even have to ask) ..... that's why i keep going back.

personally it's no big deal in doing so.

Not sure I understand what you are laughing about Gomer If that item gets damaged or does not make it to the buyer I'm out 200.00 not the buyer.

maybe you can enlighten me on how I would be able to skirt that.

FWIW i have paid out before so it is not like it just talk.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Hi Steve.... if you're concerned about paypal chargebacks or whatever ..... you simply state you **don't** accept paypal or offer insurance for items from North of the Border.
The buyer sends you an MO ...you send the card via regular mail (bubble mailer postage =$1.00 ) .........if by chance the item doesn't arrive >> tough-ti sh*t-ski. The buyer understood the risks of the transaction. Other than a possible neg. You lose nothing !!

US - Canadian volume seller garygor(Arizona), deals with the issue this way ..... and the last time i checked was batting 100% .......

tmoe(PA) accepts paypal and also is batting 100% ..... so you might want to take a peak at their auctions or contact them personally for more info. and /or secrets of the trade.

As for the customs sticker ....mark everything as pictures(so not to raise the curiosity of the mail guy who happens to be a collector) and a gift with a $1 - $20 value. It'll be uninsured anyways ...so it's not going to matter.....(aka newenglandsportscards)

btw... i've done hundreds this way > never had a problem (knock on cardboard)
