If you won the lottery, what would you buy first?

Ok, I've never played the lottery even once and don't plan on playing. However, I do find this an interesting question. Just for kicks - if you won multiple millions in the lottery, what would you buy first for your collection?

Cards - I would build a high grade 1952 Topps complete set. I think it would be neat to build one over time, rather than buy one all at once. I would want it in an album for viewing purposes. That would be a start to building every Topps set from 1952 to present.

Memorabilia - autographed Babe Ruth baseball.

I would buy up the best raw 50s/60s/70s Topps baseball sets (and start at least 70s/80s/90s Topps football) I could find. Then I could have a whole nearly 60 year run of Topps sets! image I mean, what could be better? image Then I could get all the Ultra Gold Medallion sets, and the 1996 and 1997 Topps Finest silver/gold sets. I'm not sure if I'd do the refractor sets or not though. Wow, makes me want to start playing lottery again! image

I would buy a high grade 1956 Topps BB set, that is my favorite set.

I guess you could get a T206 Wagner for what around quarter million? I guess I would like a couple versions of it.

I'd pay off my law school loans, then buy an apartment in New York. I'm not sure I'd have much left, but the first card on my list would be Babe Ruth #144, the perfect card.

Just about anything I could find in high grade from the Old Judge cards to 1954 Topps. Love those T3 Turkey Reds.
In the early 1980's, I had the opportunity to buy a raw T3 Cobb in nrmt-mt condition for $1,500.00. It had the slightest touched upper right corner. Really sorry that I did not have the money then.

Personally, before spending a penny on cards, I would live like a rock star for a couple of weeks image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

I'd get the '33 Goudey Ruths, the Gehrig's of '33 and '34, the '51 B and '52 T Mantle, stuff like that. Nothing gem mint though, more like VERY well-centered 6's or 7's. Possibly an 8 here and there of other famous big leaguers, but not an 8 in the biggest of names. And then I'd probably get them photographed very well, and place those on display, switching things around here and there until I liked the results, while the cards would be tucked away in a nice, dark safety deposit box.

    Fun to think about!

I would probably buy the T215 near set in the upcoming Mastro Live auction
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

If I won enough money to do basically whatever I wanted to I would go after the 1952, 1953 and 1954 Topps set's piece by piece in PSA 8.
  • Tough call.
    Card - Wagner any condition
    Auto - Ruth
Game Used - Cobb Bat or Shoeless Joe's Black Betsy.

I would buy a PSA 9 Bart Starr Rookie to start but would look at completing my Packer and Football HOF rookie sets.
  • A fully restored 1969 GTO Judge

Then a shopping spree on bbcexchange
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

  • My freedom...I'd pay off all my debt.

    Ditto.

First, I'd clear out all the junk I've been meaning to sell.

Along with a nice high-grade vintage assortment, I'd purchase a 1985 Topps football set PSA 9 and 10.

Probably purchase a bigger home to house a ton of vintage unopened.

    Rip it all, of course.

I would hunt down that highest graded 100k Vezina RC that bmw used to have.. "I'll make you an offer you can't refuse".. I would also hunt down game worn jersey's or Terry Sawchuk, Gordie Howe, Jacques Plante among others... Once my collection is large enough I would open a Western Canadian Hockey Museum to keep the stuff in.

I would have a serious car collection as well with a garage as big as a Costco for them to live in with a greese monkey on staff..

    1987 topps vending case!!
    No really,
I am assuming you mean tens of millions of dollars. I would travel a lot, pay off my debt, buyy the typical pre war cards and early leaf, topps, and bowman sets in high grade from PSA and SGC, high profile cards of other later hall of famers, finish off the collection of cards I wanted in my youth.

Really, I would save 95% of it, then buy all this stuff with the dividends
  • I think everything has been said, but I would definitely go on a vintage unopened buying spree, as much as I could find.

Id love to get a MLB & MLBPA license to issue cards and try to market more to the kids. Also a website called "Where's Mick", similar to "Where's George?" where you could log your PSA or SGC card number and watch it's travels through the years and prices.

If at first you dont succeed, keep on sucking, til you do succeed.
  • Well, I'd head right for BBCE and buy up all the unopened stuff from 1985 back... as much as I could carry out of there. I'd especially really love to tear into those '72 & '75 Topps baseball, some 81 Basketball, 84 football and some 79 hockey! Man, what a thrill that would be... just opening up stacks and stacks of that great older stuff!

  • This little guy lifetime Dodger season tickets.

My older son likes the Dodgers as well but not as much as this guy. I see him in a few years knowing the stats. He watches games in his room while playing and will come tell me "Dad did you know this is Brad Pennys 1st time hitting in a nite game on Wednesday while tired and facing a batter who has the flu"? or whatever. image He actually says what they say.

  • Like most everyone else I'd pay off my bills, and set enough aside so that the monthly bills would be covered forever.

Then a new bass guitar (like the other ones I have aren't already enough), then it would be on to baseball cards!

1952-1960 Topps sets, some T206s, some Goudys, and just for giggles maybe try to put together some late 1960s-early 1970s baseball sets from unopened boxes. Ya know, just for giggles.
    2001-2014 Topps Heritage complete!
  • First thing I'd do is pay off my mortgage, then I might go a little crazy....
