Damaged Card?

I recently sold a card on ebay and mailed it in a bubble pack with 3 other cards...I have not seen the card...however the buyer tells me that one of the corners was damaged and wants a refund...he claims my poor delivery some how damaged this card (inside the holder)? It is a PSA 8 1958 Topps card...

The question I have...has anyone experienced anything like this...how can a corner inside PSA holder possibly be damaged within the holder without breaking the holder? I'm mindboggled?

You could shake the card all day long and I'm not sure you could damage it?

seems odd to me. I would want to see it before I did anything.

    just be careful.

  • I would have the buyer send the card back before you issue him a refund. You should offer to split the shipping and was the card shipped with insurance you may have a claim.

if the case is not cracked in any way I dont see how you are responsible for any damage. if he still insists on a refund tell him the refund will come after you get the card back. I would offer to repay his shipping charges. otherwise if the case is not cracked or damaged and he still wants his money back tell him good luck, since he bought the card as is, since it was graded by a third party and sealed and remains as such.

This link will show that damage to a card inside a PSA holder is close to impossible

  • Yeah, somethings going on there. How in the hell is a corner going to get bent in a holder? Doesn't happen.

I collect T-206s and sometimes the cards are very loose within the holder. But to bend a corner???? I highly doubt it.

i agree with bobbyvcp. have the buyer return it. i had a similar instance happen with a 1980 lou piniella. i sent to many cards in a psa shipping box and the last card was damanged in shipment. the seller returned the card to me and i will be resending to psa and sending back to him.

    Thanks,

  • depends on what "damaged" means. NM-MT cards don't have 4 perfect corners. One man's slight fraying could be another man's "damaged" corner.

at any rate, seriously doubt a 58T is going to move very much in a holder but if your scan was poor in your auction, maybe the card didn't meet his expectations and if you did not state a return policy (many sellers don't accept returns on graded cards), then I would get the card back and refund the payment. If the holder was damaged somehow, then hopefully he kept the original packaging and you could file a claim.

The guy obviously kept three cards so he may be a good long term customer for you.

It would be great if you could somehow get a scan of the damaged card and post it. That would answer a lot of questions IMO.

  • This all I got from this fellow...

Received item damaged probably in shipping. Left lower corner at bottom, surface paper "rolled up or over" edge. This is very noticable and visually distracts from overall apperance of the card, and because of this, card will not be worth what I paid but a lower grade amount(maybe a grade of PSA 7). I need a full refund and credit for this card.

I replied to him...asking if the case was damaged...because this does not explain anything...and then I got...

If you do not credit me I will give negative feedback and contact ebay as well as pal pal and let them know you did not care about this buyer. I bought something from you that is not what it was advertised and supposed to be. Therefore, it is fraud. There is no way this card was not damaged. You did not ship it properly.

When he went into his "fraud" dance...he lost me...if I had access to the guy I would have knocked him on his ass...

I first attempted to find out what actually happened...because I could not understand how only 1 card out of 4 was damaged...the other cards were 7's and this one is mysteriously damaged some how in the corner?...So? How? I asked was he trying to tell me that the case was damaged, cracked whatever...and the above is what I got...

Anyway...at this point I told him to return all 4 cards as I was not interested in doing any business with him...and if indeed the card is damaged...then I will take it up with PSA as I believe they guarantee their work...

Methinks that the reason this card was an 8 and not a 9 or 10 was maybe because of this corner...but since I do not remember the card or have it at the moment...all of this is conjecture?

  • To offer a slightly different take, have him send you a scan.
If the card was damaged inside the holder and the holder is not disturbed, then I think you should send him to PSA has they "gaurentee" or however that is spelled their grade. PSA would then pay off if the card was truly damaged.
If the card looks as it did, tell him to keep it and expect the neg.

Can I have his ID so I can block him please?
  • Henri,

When I started reading this, I thought, well it's just one card, go ahead and take it back and refund. It's probably buyer's remorse, but just for one card it's not worth the hassle.

Now, after reading his response to you that you posted, I'd be inclined to tell him to fk himself since he's being such a dick. Hopefully, he won't neg you one on all 4 cards.

I'd like to block this tool's ID as well. Sorry this happened to you.

edited to add: I've always been a "leave feedback as soon as I get paid" seller. Every time I read a post like this, it makes me want to rethink that.

    henri,
He's an azz. If the holder isnt damaged hes out of his mind. Give him a refund or just take the negative its really no big deal with your history. Everyone will know hes a jerk.

you can respond to a neg if its left. thats what i would do. you cant be held responible for damage done inside a sealed slab.

agreed, there is no way you can damage a slabbed card unless it got run over buy the mail truck or something, sounds more like a nutjob to me, like the others said ,put him on bid block,i probably got aabout 500 people on mine by now since 1999 lol, take a negative, who cares? ive had 36,000+ transactions on ebay selling and buying, only gotten 11 negatives, but theres always the occasional nut out there somewhere- ive had people threaten to call the police lol, thats always a good one, file a claim with ebay and paypal/i always give em my phone # and tell em to give me a call, then they usually always end up really mad,the way i see it if they dont get insurance or delivery confirmation, its not my fault for the post offices incomatence if the item is lost/stolen/or broke, after it leaves my house, its your baby, kinda a p rick way to look at it,but i get all the time, ive never recieved this item and stuff like that, and if they didnt get ins of confirmation on it, it their baby ,not mine

p.s.-love the pink floyd the wall hammers, i had a bunch of these made up in silver and gold bullion and sold a ton of em on ebay, were about 8x12 inches that you could hang from the wall, all gone now or i would send ya one to put with your hammering hank stuff!image

treetop-the paint shaker test, that is very cool,if u cant damage one in one of those things, especially a card with a black border, that pretty well proves it to me,black borders are the worst, and if a paint shaker didnt damage it with the black border, they are very stout indeed!!

Screw him. Tell him all sales on graded cards are final. He's BSing you for sure, and the hyperbole he's spouting about fraud, etc. is what these guys typically do to try and intimidate you. As treetop's link shows, there is no way a card can be damaged if the holder is not. He'll probably take a hammer to the holder if you ask him to send him it back!

  • I had all four cards returned...and the suspect card is not damaged...one corner was weak...maybe it shouldn't have been graded an 8...but it was...now that I've seen the card again...my guess is that the card most likely was a 9 that was graded 8 because of this corner...whatever...the corner was not damaged in the mail...

I've already blocked this bidder from bidding on any of my cards in the future...

  • I would refund him his money minus your eBay and shipping costs...it should cost him the money for changing his mind and not you..
