Random cool FB set from 1993 ......

For whatever reason, I like random quirky sets from the early to mid 90s when I collected. I just picked up this set and thought it was cool because it was an intriguing concept that should've been used more. Basically, in 1993 Stadium Club inserted "Super Teams" cards into packs. If the team you pulled wins the division at the end of the year then you can redeem it for that team's set. If your team wins the conference, you get a Master Photos set. If your team wins the Super Bowl, then you get a complete 500 card Stadium Club parallel set with the Superbowl XXVIII logo stamped on each card. What was cool about it was the value of the Super Team cards would fluctuate every month (in Beckett) based on their perceived chance at winning the Super Bowl. Towards the end of the year when it was apparent that the Cowboys had the best team, their Super Team card was going for $100+.

I just picked up this set for $30 and I think I'm gonna grade about a dozen cards I think are probable 10s, then break the rest up and sell as team sets. I have another one of these sets on the way I think I'll keep complete. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

Yes very nice set. I was going to send in mine on the June special but I did not have enough time (or funds) because of a few other submissions I was sending in. I have mine set aside for the next special. I am sure I will get a few 10's.
    Good Luck,

It's also strange to see him with a high-top fade. Looks like he's auditioning for BoysIIMen.

Mass production or not, I always love Stadium Club's design.

PS - Look at that line blocking for Emmitt image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • This was also done with the Basket ball set with the Rockets winning it all. I sent it in and have the cards with division, conference and world champs on them. Great idea....althought did not continue for any other year.

Wonder how many were also send in?

You probably already know what I'm going to say.

Dibs on the Cowboys--also have multiple player collections of non-Cowboys if you would consider breaking up some of the other team sets that you are going to sellimage
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I'm shocked Akbar- you need random cards from an obscure 90s set? No way. Once I get everything straightened out, I'll post something on the Buy-Sell-trade forum.

james- I'd be curious to know how many sets were redeemed as well. I have a few NBA Finals sets on the way as well. It's like sometimes I'll remember a set I used to want and then go on a wild goose chase looking for as many as I can. I really thought the Super Teams concept was a cool idea at the time, and my hope is that at some point others realize how neat these sets are.

I love sets like this, and at $30 it's hard to go wrong. Topps issued these sets as prizes for the game cards in 1993 and 1994 (for football, I dunno about other sports). According to my notes, they printed 5000 of each team's card in 1994, so there were a maximum of 5000 sets redeemed. I don't have any notes on 1993.

No such details will spoil my plans...

That is a very cool way to give out special sets like that. And if 5000 were printed, you'd have to assume that some remain possibly uncirculated since everyone that got a redemption card probably didn't send it in. Or I could be wrong and there is 5000 out there, still cool. image
