Ichiro to re-sign with the Mariners

Likely terms of the deal: 5 years, 100 million. I love it.

  • Axtell,

I have noticed an effort to be a more cordial member of the boards....keep it up. By no means does that mean you should agree with people for the sake of it, but your attitude seems a bit better in disagreements.

Sure, the Mariner bias is showing a bit...but that isn't unlike all the other bias from the other teams' fans.

Yeah, I hope they sign him and then promptly trade him to the Red Sox.
  • WOW! What a nice inside the parker for Ichiro!! His hit ealier ( the loop into left) was a sweet one as well.

  • Ichiro, MVP...first all star game inside the park home run, new 5 year deal. I love it.

  • << <i>Ichiro is a great player and any team should want him but $20 million per season for 5 years sounds a bit steep, especially as the contract will be for when he is 34-39 years old. I would have expected him to get more of a 3-4 year contract in the $15 million per season range. Having said that, I'm just talking baseball value here based on my opinion. I have no idea what money there is in having Ichiro related to the whole Japan thing. >>

I think it shows they are committed to winning and to him. And with the rate at which he's going this year, who's to say he won't still be a dominant force in 5 years? I mean he should be in the discussion for MVP this year, and has shown no signs of slowing down.

He's an incredibly unique player, so it's tough to put a price tag on him. Obviously they want to keep him as he's the face of the franchise, much like Griffey was when he was here. Throw in the financial windfall he brings in from Japan and $20 mil per is quite doable.

While he should be in a discussion for MVP, he should get absolutely zero votes for 1st place if the season stopped today.

Why can't he win the MVP? He leads the league in hits and is hitting .359 for a team that's 13 games over .500. Who should win it, AROD? I'd rather have a guy from a winning team win the MVP...
  • talking MVP. I'd vote for Magglio Ordonez over Ichiro, or even Gary Sheffield, his veteran bat/presence has been huge for Detroit.

Another easy pick over Ichiro is Vlad. Without him the Angels are without a true power source and clean up hitter.

I would also have no problem throwing a vote to Victor Martinez of Cleveland, putting up superb numbers and carrying the offense since Hafner is slumping.

I agree on Magglio Ordonez winning it. Ichiro 'should' finish higher than AROD, though...

I'd be just fine with that! How about we ship the M's Lugo and Wily Mo Pena in return?

The pricetag is high, but he brings in a large part of the Japanese market to Seatle. I'd say the price is about right.

And where exactly do you think the M's would be without Ichiro? Do you think they'd be anywhere close to competing for the division, let alone the wild card, without him? Far too often I think people get caught up in power numbers as the only way a guy can contribute.
  • your blind devotion to Ichiro apparently makes it impossible to see beyond the Seattle area. The last two seasons Ichiro has hit uNDEr .300 the 2nd half. Thats not a $20million dollar man.

Crazy money to pay for a slap hitter with speed who will finish up his career at 39 years old.

If the Yankees somehow make the playoffs (crazier things have happened) of course AROD can figure into the MVP race.

Vlad is a much easier choice for MVP than Ichiro, no doubt about it.

Is Ichiro Major League Baseball's MVP? In my opinion, no.

But what’s a seven-year, seven All-Star, seven gold glove, All Star MVP, career .333 avg leadoff hitter worth?

    In today's market, $20 million plus. It's a no-brainer, guys...

  • Vlad of course has been valuable to the Angels, just like Ichiro has been valuable to the Mariners. Both give their value in wildly different ways: Vlad hits for a ton of power, Ichiro is the placesetter and plays tremendous defense.

To say that Ichiro is simply a 'slap' hitter denegrates all he does. And if he wasn't worth this money, then why have so many teams expressed interest in signing him?

First of all, all the players mentioned earlier are good candidates for MVP. But the second half of the season will really tell the tale. I can hardly wait to see how it plays out.

I think the Red Sox fans on here are joking around, but why do they think everyone is an idiot except the Sox and that everyone owes their team players like Ichiro....for Lugo, etc? The Red Sox were so brilliant to sign Lugo in the first place....seems to be a fairly idiotic move to me. Let their brilliance in that signing stay with them for the year. No one in their right mind would take Lugo off of their hands. image

  • I'd trade Vidro for Lugo straight up today.

Don, I was totally kidding - I would be ecstatic to see a player like Ichiro on the Red Sox, of course, but it isn't happening. I think he is way more than a "slap hitter with speed". In my opinion, he's one of the best pure hitters in the game today, and with that he adds speed and great defense. He seems to be on base all the time. He's as legit an MVP candidate as anyone so far this season - talk about Arod all you want for that award, but even with his gaudy stats, the Yankees still stink. So, how valuable could he be?

LOL! I knew you were but I decided to get a 'gig' in. image

You know, just thinking of Ichiro playing in Fenway on a full time basis is very intriguing. Won't happen I don't think, but think of the possibilities with that!

While Ichiro would help any ball club that he plays for, a sure fire way for him to guarantee never having a WS ring would be to go and play for the Yankees. >>

    You're right!

That's pretty funny considering the Sox have won the WS much more recently than the Yanks have, and oh btw, have a much, much better team this year. Quit drinking that Yankee cool-aide, lol!

Ah - go easy on him. It must be tough behind that woodshed (where all the Yankee fans seem to be) having to watch your $200M+ team fight to stay out of the cellar in the AL East. And, having to watch Roger Clemens get beat by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. I'd be cranky, too.

Yes I agree with Jerry, we will let the Red Sox dig go this time around because it is coming from a very disgruntled Yankee fan image

so, anybody up for a late season Red Sox collapse? image

Seriously, with all of the talk the past few months about how pathetic the Yankees are (and they have been) why are they just 9 games behind a team that if you believe what is written around here are a juggernaut? Easy answer. Juggernaut NO. Crappy division? Yes.
