Are these really proposed 1980 Donruss designs, or just created after the fact?

1980 Donruss?

After all, you guys know how 2003 Bowman Hertiage was based off the proposed 1956 Bowman design, so was this really how Donruss would've made their cards in 1980 (that is, did they have this design ready to go in 1980?) or did they just create this design after the fact for this set?

  • I don't know, but I like the design - except for the pennant in the bottom right corner.

They look FAR too clean to be actual designs, IMHO. Line them up against the actual 1981 and 1982 designs, and your example will certainly stick out.

Could it be something the seller designed themself ?

To be fair, though, I really like the cards. A quick search for "Donruss what if" brings back some nice results.

Note how this Mattingly even has the proper jersey number. I watched a bit of Righett's 1983 no-hitter on YES the other day and saw Mattingly wearing #46. Did he cut that in half by 1984?

I've been looking at these Donruss "What If" cards of late too. (I just discovered them. Shows how far removed I am from modern cards.) I love these cards-that-never-were, particulary the Mattingly and the '84 Donruss cards of Clemens and Puckett. But you'd think they could have come up with something more original for the "1980" Donruss cards: They ripped off the flag or banner from 1980 Topps. The "1978" cards look too much like early 1990s Score cards.

Liked these so much when they came out that I bought a case - quite a fun afternoon/night of ripping to be had there - loved the designs.
Just glad to be here with everyone.

I think they even did sets with proposed 1999 and 2000 designs complete with that year's proposed Diamond Kings too.
