Cracking out or not

I've seen many posts regarding crossing cards over to other grading companies; predominantly to PSA. It has been suggested nearly all of the time to crack the card out, especially if you are looking for a bump up. Couple of questions: Has anyone ever sent in a graded card and received the same grade or higher from PSA? What would happen if PSA damaged the card that was encased? Is there a dollar limit that you would refrain from cracking out due to risk of damage (i.e any graded BGS, SGC or GAI with a value in excess of $250, $500 etc) and just send in still graded?

I personally have a tough time cracking anything out that has a selling value of $150 or more if it is high grade. Mid-grade vintage dosen't bother me as much.
  • thanks for the response

I've had several that crossed into the same grade when I sent in slabs under "Crossover" service (SGC to PSA). I've never had any bumped to a higher grade that way though. However, I've had many bump to a higher grade when I cracked it and sent in raw. That's what I would recommend.

I agree with the crack out and send for most subs. Most of my bumps up have been the half grades from GAI, SGC, etc. A few whole grade up. I would guess that about 80% stay the same, 10% up and 10% down.

As for the value and risking damage to the card? Haven't tried on anything worth more than a couple hundred bucks but if you practice you should feel confident. I would also consider the value of the card in it's present holder vs. the value in PSA, what is the rationale for switching holders (registry, eye appeal, resale), and if the risk is worth the money.

I have only one set at the moment that I crack out because at some point it will be in the Registry. Other sets I leave in SGC, but switch any GAI or BVG to PSA. Those may hit the Registry some day and would be switched then but for now the SGC looks great and I have no plans to sell the cards.

It all depends on what you need to get from the card for yourself. Here's a thread with some results -
