what the heck is a tall boy ?

I see the term used on psa's site and I have no idea what it is. i looked it up and it says a beer can that holds 16 ounces.

now come on!

i just want psa to have a $5 special again for grading ordinary cards. anyone know when that will happen again? I might ahve to go to beckett for $7 a card if psa won't have competitive prices.

but let's get back to this tall boy thing. does everyone know what this is or am i the sole person who's in the dark? mind you i have no interest in anything over 1976 so are these a recent issue of some nature or something old, or does psa grade old tall beer cans?
have just these left, ALL OF 1975 mini set: brett: bvg 8.5, rose psa 8, ryan psa 7, bobby bonds and carl yastrzemski both at psa 8 but will get reviewed, and ungraded fred lynn rookie that i won't get graded as it'll only be a 7 to 8, and the following i plan to get graded: reggie jackson, 1962-mvp card, 1967 mvp card, hank aaron

I think those are the b-ball cards Topps did in the late 60s/early 70s that were taller than the standard size (I'm not sure how much exactly), hence the term, tall boys.

  • I'm not sure of the specific measurements of a Tall Boy, but it may just include any card that's larger than a standard sized baseball card.

A few examples would be any of the T201 Mecca Double Folders, 1950's Red Man cards or 1965 Topps Football.

If you're not sure what those look like, do a search for them on Ebay to see some images of them.

(Someone feel free to correct me if I'm in any way wrong, here)

By the way PSA has bulk submissions all the time that are $6 each, you don't have to wait for a special to be cheaper than $7.

Tall boys are cards that fit in the tall boy holders.

1965 topps football are taller than normal cards of that era
1969-70 basketball cards are taller than normal cards of that era
    exhibit postcards are tall boys
    kahn's baseball/basketball/football are tall boys
red man tobacco I believe are tall boys
early 70s icee bear basketball cards are tall boys.

They are cards that are a little too big to fit in the standard holder. They fit in card saver IVs because they are tall. Maybe you can see in the pic that the east hills clemente card has no chance of fitting in a regular holder. That's a tall boy.

  • well, thanks, but not sure if tallboy term is really that well recognized. perhaps psa could be more clear.

are the 1971 jumbo cards called tall boys or are they big and tall men?

I'd like only 40-50 more cards graded by psa. i am no dealer that can afford paying $400-500 plus all the shipping and insurance.

I like the $5 special and even that was killing me with 16 cards plus the standard "free" 6 cards that really cost me $16 by having to be a member. It's stacked against the small-guy to afford the service.

You think PSA would negotiate a deal? I doubt it.

Cards bigger than a standard size, but not larger than 3.5" x 5.5". Everything over that is supersized.
