Question - DSL and 4SC Models? Websites?

All, I have seen references in several threads about a DSL and 4SC model to selling sportcards. What do these acronyms mean?

Also, I am looking for good sport cards websites/marketplaces to buy cards from. I regularly hit eBay, Sportslots, Naxcom, and Beckett. Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Paul

DSL = Discount Sports Liquidators = ebay id= dsl_sports (He doesn't accept paypal)

4SC = 4 Sharp Corners = ebay id = 4_Sharp_Corners, 4_Sharp_Corners_2 (my favorite), 4_Sharp_Corners_Store and Newenglandsportscards (NESC for short) the seller of all the raw they pull from rack, vending and sets that aren't gradeable.

  • Hey Paul,

Depends on what your interests are in collecting sportscards.

For vintage cards, Network54.com is a great place.

For PSA graded cards across a bunch of genre: www.707sportscards.com is pretty good. Prices are a little high, sometimes.

Another pretty good site is: www.simsclassicsports.com (they've got weekly specials)

  • Thanks to the people who have already responded. I appreciate it.

Sorry - I guess I should have been more specific on what I collect. I am looking for modern football cards - Topps only - from about 1990-2003. I usually buy in raw form because the deals are better but would consider graded (PSA preferred - obviously) if reasonably priced. Looking for those great websites to buy individual cards to fill in some holes.

if your looking to buy raw for grading then i wouldnt recommend newengland sports because the cards are already been looked over for grading purposes as mentioned above.

fwiw the best from my experience on raw unopen material are these 3 dealers

    The Card Kid Mark Murphy

    Steve Hart's Baseball Exchange

    Dave and Adam's Card World

I didn't know that accepting paypal was the standard on how to judge a seller. You failed to add that if you are a frequent customer in good standing you can settle your tab up in a month or longer without negative feedback of that you can win 50 auctions and the shipping is still $8.

I don't like that 4SC has multiple ebay names and there is no combined shipping, but they still have fair shipping prices, accept paypay if that is important and if you are builder of a good sized set in PSA 8-9-10 condition I think that you have used them or DSL.

Not to derail this thread, but it's good to see that Mark Murphy has bounced back from that fire he had a few years ago. I see that he is now living in San Diego instead of La Jolla. Sunset Cliffs Blvd is a pretty nice place to live. I remember that road when I was there. Anyways, I've bought from him before. I recommend his unopened material. I got a bunch of gorgeous Rickey Henderson RC's from a case I bought from him. Steve Hart is good too.

I've noticed that DSL has gotten a lot heavier lately in vintage while 4SC is still pumping out modern, and lots of it. I like DSL even if they don't take Paypal. I don't blame them. Between Ebay and Paypal fees anymore, it's tough to make a profit.

Czar - I was hardly judging the seller, merely stating that one accepts paypal and one does not. For me, that is important. I've bought from DSL plenty of times and had no issues at all. They tend to have a different inventory so I look at both of them frequently. I've bought quite a bit more from 4SC because he matches up better with what I need many times. Not saying anything bad about DSL at all. NESC on the other hand...if you want nice, albeit ungradeable raw, then they are fine. I've used them to backfill sets that I've cherry picked before. Nothing wrong with them, just that the raw is usually the scraps that weren't gradeable from the vending and racks that 4SC chose not to grade. As long as you know that, then no big deal.

  • Those singles must be BAD if 4SC won't grade em!!!

I like DSL and have bought a lot from them.

4Sharp Corners is a mystery to me. I send e-mail after e-mail asking for information after I have bought cards from them and they never respond--when they do it makes little sense--they then send me invoices which are wrong or have incredible shipping charges. Then I try to straighten out the shipping and ultimately find out they don't combine shipping. Meanwhile I start getting all these non-payment warnings from ebay. Finally I figure out and send multiple checks. Whew! Then I go to bid on another item and they banned me! Incredible!

I have never been banned or had an unsatisfatory experience buying cards before--until with them.

They don't combine shipping across their ID's, which is annoying I agree. I am really surprised you had such a hard time with them. I've waited 10-14 days to pay before and they've still combined the shipping (same id of course) for me without issue. Email is not their strong suit, I've had the same experience with DSL in regards to email though. They sell a lot of cards and probably don't have as much time to reply as we'd like.

Only to get the cards all in one package I bet?

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I've bought from both more than a couple of times. I haven't purchased from 4sc in awhile and I think their shipping fees have come down recently, but both have slightly excessive fees IMO. I prefer DSL despite their weak packaging ( 2 or 3 slabbed cards rubber-banded together, no cardboard/bubble-wrap protection) but their cards seem to be high-end for the grade with nice eye-appeal. The cards I purchased from 4SC have been mediocre.
  • Jim,
Sorry to hear of your issues. Have the opportunity to claim either of these as a dependent on my tax return based on what I send them and never really a problem with either.

    Steve,
Two ebay id's. Two seperate payments. Two seperate package.
Have paid mulitple id's at the same time and always get multiple packages.

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

Actually they are quite nice. 4SC is looking for 10's on modern stuff (80's to present). If it's not a card that would get a premium in at least 9, they are not going to grade it. These cards are great if you just want some nice NM/MT raw cards.
