Will A-Rod break the all-time record???

I was just sifting through some stats, and came across something interesting (to me at least). With all the hype about A-Rod possibly going to eventually blow away the all-time HR mark, I realized something. Dude also has a very decent chance at setting the record for all-time futility... strikeouts, that is. Right now he has 1,475, on pace for another 65 this year. That would put him at about 1,540 going into 2008. For the last 8 years, he's averaged 130 K's per year. If he continues that on that pace, he would have to play until he was 40 to eclipse the mark of 2,597 set by Reggie. He could actually come really close at 39 (2015), assuming he still plays ~150 game per year between now and then (projected at 2,580). I don't know if he will play that long, but this is definately something I will be tracking if he does. Perfect scenario for me would be... he continues playing way past his prime to try and break the HR record and end up falling short of that but ends up blowing away the K record. Man, would be great to see him end up with 3,000 K's!

I heard that in the off-seasonthat he lost like 10 pounds or so. So i dont see how he's gaining weight then.
So what if he does end up with 3000 K's? He's still likely to go down in history as the best player to ever play, and no amount of strikeouts is going to diminish that.
As for the best player to ever play, that's pushing it a bit. Sure, assuming no major injury or productivity decline, he'll end up amassing some impressive power numbers, but that certainly won't make him the best of all time. I think there are a lot of other factors, including defense, as well as intangibles. To me, the crap that A-Rod has pulled both on and off the field itself detracts from his overall appeal as a baseball player. Sure, that does not technically detract from his stats, but I still think it's the overall package, and A-Rod simply does not have the integrity to be put in the class of guys like Aaron, Ripken, Maddux... those guys and so many other that are true attributes to the game of baseball. Guys like Bonds, A-Rod, Rose, etc may have the great stats, but they actually have a negative aspect to them that I beleive should not allow them to be considered the greatest baseball player ever. Splitting hairs a bit maybe, but that's how I feel about it.

<< <i>Really? Who for instance? The only current player with a remote chance of breaking RJ's mark is Sosa, but it's doubtful that he'll play long enough to do so. The thing about amassing so many K's is that that guy also has to be good enough to play for 15+ years and be mostly injury free during that time. Otherwise, certainly guys like Sexson would have a real shot at it. Thing is, Sexson won't be long for this league if he continues hitting around the Mendoza line. >>
First, Sexson is not a career .200 hitter, so he won't be playing that poorly all year. Second, you still haven't told me what harm setting the all-time K record will do. When people think or talk of Reggie, is his being #1 on that list ever mentioned?

So if he becomes the HR king with, oh, say 800+ HRs, has many MVP awards, and is regarded as the best SS to ever play the game, exactly what would make him the best all time? Maddux and Ripken are in that conversation? Would you say that Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle were legendary, almost mythical baseball figures? Did they or did they not pull plenty of 'off the field crap'? Exactly how did that affect their standing in baseball's lore? Oh that's right, it didn't. What has Arod pulled off the field? Dating strippers? Oh you mean like Dimaggio's affair and then marriage to Marilyn Monroe? And to suggest that Arod is the only player to cavort with women on the road is humorous at best, ignorant at worst.
It's apparent from your other posts you somehow feel betrayed that Arod took the money and left to Texas - interesting to note that any one of us would have done the same exact thing.
good nite,
