WoW - On one hand, I really feel for this guy...
... on the other hand, I'm totally breaking the "coveting" commandment. Selling off entire IHC collection (minus 1909-S & 1877), and also some nice Flying Eagles.
Auction description quote: "Selling this set is like selling a arm or leg or both I hate to have to! I have the right to cancel all auctions (if I win lottery I am keeping set )"
(Ummm... if I win the lottery, I'm buying the set!

Guess that's why I still have my too-dark, VF example which sticks out like a sore thumb. Every time I see a suitable replacement, it's moon money (relative to the other commons).
<< <i>One thing I've noticed over the years is that the 1888 is a surprisingly tough date in eye-appealing EF and above. This is borne out by the prices realized for nice, problem-free EFs and above -- and as witnessed by this listing. As often as not they wind up selling for double the sheets, significantly more than any other "common" date around it.

Actually, not too bad at all... I'm sure it's darker in hand, but it can't be as bad as this one!
<< <i>FWIW, I don't care for the surfaces of his 1888. Looks cleaned and retoned. >>
And yet look at what it's going for. I've seen EFs going for $30+ and AUs going for $60+ on this date when it really is all there. It's not quite the look I'd be after anyway, but this date in this condition seems to bring out the money.
I have no problem spending more for this date, or any tougher date, but it then has to be really "ideal" in appearance. Since I already have that one in AU, I haven't bothered looking for any others. The 1894 is another favorite "tougher" date, but I found getting a decent AU 1895 more of a challenge.
I love this place!

This date is apparently a lot tougher in solid EF+ than the others around it. I certainly don't see as many of them available as the others in the 1887-93 range, and when I do find a nice, original '88 I like -- with a similar look to the other coins in my collection -- it goes absolutely thermonuclear relative to sheet.
