You got it. Usually BCCG 10's = psa 7's or 8's in card quality

Using the original posters linked card as an example, am I wrong in thinking that BCCG is a pre grade by BGS, and that if you submit a BCCG card, still in its BCCG holder, to BGS that they will honor the pre grade, and the card will transfer into a Mint 9 or better BGS holder?

NO, BCCG is a cheap, mass grading outfit that take very little time to actually grade a card. generally speaking, a BCCG 10 could grade BGS/PSA 7-10.

BCCG is only popular for people trying to dump crappy cards on unsuspecting buyers.

The BGS pregrade is called Raw Card Review and even then, they regrade them before they slab those as BGS.

Beckett offers two services. A BCCG, which is not reliable, card quality wise, and BGS which more feel are reliable. I also think this two tier system has hurt Beckett.

There has to be more to it. Beckett wouldnt just let this BCCG ruin there name like that.

The deal with BCCG, it is used mainly by dealers who submit tons of cards to BGS. They submit their "garbage" to BCCG to get a high grade on a nice RC that would grade low using Bgs. This way, newbies to the grading world just see the 10 and automatically think its great and the seller makes some decent money on a card they would normally not submit.

So what you're saying is:

One Beckett company says it is mint or better. Then you the collector say: "wow, now that i know its a high grade card I need to get this slabbed the right way. Well I guess I'll keep it within Beckett because they already know it is mint or better"

but the other Beckett company may say "nope, it is NM7"?

And no one at the first company gets fired for not performing their job correctly?

My belief is that BCCG was created to try to compete with the PRO, GEM, FGS, and other low dollar grading start ups of the world while preserving the high dollar grading market at the same time.

It was not that long ago that grading any card was a much more expensive proposition than it has become now. Initially grading was for high end items, it was about quality much more so than quantity and PSA only had semi-serious competition from SGC. There was money to be made, especially in light of the considerably higher grading fees charged at the time.

Then, as competition often does, prices were driven down when a host of other players entered the grading market space using lower grading fees to differentiate themselves and try to take share from the market leaders. Beckett, having thrown their hat into the arena around this same time, took a novel approach in an effort to preserve higher grading fees akin to PSA and SGC (BGS) and created a lower tier grading service to compete with the "others" (BCCG).

Frankly, this is one of the major problems I have with Beckett grading... blatantly changing the grading standards based on the price paid by the submitter. It, to me, runs contrary to the concept of grading all together. Secondly, the conflict of interest really turned me off... odd how, at least initially, BGS cards were priced higher in the Beckett Price Guides than PSA examples were.

Sure it is. You have dealers submitting tons of cards to bgs. What do they do with all the "nice" rc or star cards that they normally would not submit, due to various reasons knowing it would be waste of grading fees when the cards would receive low grades and dont sell for alot.

Its actually quite smart on Becketts part. Getting extra money on cards that normally would stay in someones closet.

less than 100 cards = 5/each
price gradually decreases with volume to
10000 + cards = $2/each

The grading isn't as strict and they don't claim to spend a lot of time grading them. Pretty straightforward and honest deal, you get what you pay for. Not sure how long it takes to get cards graded.

Russ, BCCG is the NTC of the card graders. I bet at times a card will not even cross 2 or 3 grades lower to PSA, it will simply be found to have been altered. And be body bagged in coin language.

Heres the thing, BCCG is a joke, in terms of honestly giving a detailed, professional grade. That being said, I'm going to take the 5th as to whether or not I actually own a few crappy late 80's early 90's RC.

I rather have the card raw then have it in a BCCG holder. I believe having the card in a BCCG holder means its not a card worth slabbing by PSA.

My biggest foray into BCCG occured about 4 years ago. I cracked 60 1986 FU Bonds RC's, all PSA 8's, and got back 49 BCCG 9's and 11 BCCG 10's (as I recall; these numbers may be off by a bit, but this is a safe ballpark figure). True, most BCCG 10's will grade in the PSA 7-9 range. But then, most PSA 10's will grade in the PSA 8-10 range, depending on who looks at the card, so I'm not sure this tells us very much.

I think BCCG started to offer Shop at Home a way to yell "GRADED A 10 ! A 10 BY BECKETT ! THE TOUGHEST GRADERS OUT THERE ! BECKETT GRADED CARDS SELL FOR x AMOUNT !" Yeah but they are BGS and not BCCG that get that money. Also novice collectors watch the show and flip open a Beckett and see that a Beckett graded 10 Griffey UD Rookie books really hi, and they get taken....nice work Dr. James

My grandpa's friend gave me a BCCG 10 Andruw Jones card that actually looks alright (probably an 8) but I noticed on the back of the label it has the Tri Star Hidden Treasures logo. I had no idea Beckett was involved in that Hidden Treasure crap.

Three good examples Leias, but while the number assigned to the BCCG card says 9, the holder clearly states NEARMINT or BETTER, telling anyone who reads it that the card is most likely a 7 from another third party grader with a regular numbering structure. Shame on the bidder as knowlegde is power.
