Baseball's most unbreakable feats

New DVD on the subject, haven't seen it yet but it includes:

Cy Young's 511 career wins (nobody is even close to that one)

Cal Ripken's consecutive game streak.

and a lesser known:

Pitcher Johnny Vander Meer's two consecutive no-hitters in 1938

How about Fernando Tatis' 2 grand slams in one inning? I watched that one live. That record will never be broken, probably not even in a softball league. I will probably never even be tied.

I think Stan Musial hit 5 HR's in a doubleheader, that is a tough one IMO. You hardly ever hear anything about that.
  • The consecutive games steak could be broken, but won't be because of financial reasons.

Ones that will never be approached:

-the aforementioned 511 wins. You could win 20 games for 20 years and still be over 100 short.
-Ricky Henderson's 1406 career steals, nearly 500 more than #2.
-single season BA of .439, or career BA of .366.
    -36 triples in one year.
  • Being a Cal Ripken fan, I don't want to see the consecutive game streak broken. It could be done, but it would take a special player and a lot of lucky breaks.

I think the 36 triples in a season could be broken, there are some fast players out there today. The thing that will hold them back is conservative managers not wanting to risk a sure double for a possible out.

Cy Young's record is the one that will -never- be broken.

  • Speaking of triples, 305 lifetime Sam Crawford. Stan Musial leads " modern" players with 177. The only other modern player over 150 is Clemente. [Ruth had 136 & Gehrig had 163!!] Steve Finley is the active leader with 124 and he's 42. Carl Crawford is amazing, but he is "already" 25 and "only" has 73. He has to maintain his average/ year for 15 more years and he would still be a bit short. I'm sorry to blather on, but I still think a triple is baseball's at it's best and it gets so little attention.

Cy Young's wins, but he also lost more games than anybody ever will.

Jack Chesbro 41 wins. I don't know if anybody will even win 30 again

Connie Mack 53 years as a manager!! 3731 won & 3948 lost Age: 87 when he retired.

The way the game has evolved, no one will ever come close
    to Cy's 749 complete games.

(1)--Stan Musial's hitting 5 homeruns in a double header was equaled by nate Colbert on 8/1/1972. We were stuck in hurricane Agnes and for some bizzarre reason , we were able to hear the game out of Atlanta, even through the storm.

(2)-- I know everyone is posting number, but the stat that most amazes me , is in 1913 Walter Johnson had the Most strikeouts/9 innings, lowest hits/9 innings and the lowest walks/9 innings, all in the same season. Total domination and never repeated. Clemons has come close a few times , but no cigar.

That's hard to break primarily because double-headers are now extinct except for day-night sets caused by rainouts.

Curtis Granderson already has 15 triples this year. I think he has a real good chance of challenging the record...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

I don't believe that Cy Young's, Walter Johnson's and Cal Ripken's personal feats will ever be topped. Some of the other's noted may never be met also, but some are kind of quirky accomplishments.

I few I would add are career bases-on-balls (walks) that Barry Bonds will forever hold when his career is over. Bonds is circa 2500 and counting, and has already surpassed Babe Ruth by about 500.

The other is Joe Dimaggio's 56 game hitting streak. This one is not tied to baseball career longevity, but amazing talent. Since 1941, with all the tremendous MLB talent and HOF'ers we have seen, nobody has come closer than 44 games.

Off the same pitcher no less, that's what makes that feat really remarkable!!!

As much as I don't like the guy, you have to respect R Henderson setting the all time SB record completely obliterating the mark set by Lou Brock. He beat him by almost 500 more SB's. 1406 to 938 – that’s almost 50% more SB’s than the previous mark.

pretty soon, wiht in a couple of years, there won't be 2 pitchers that add up to his total.

I believe that has been done before at least once if I remember correctly, once by Nate Colbert.

I doubt if we will see anyone hit 70+ homeruns again.

Joe's 56 game streak in 1941 I believe was the same year Ted Williams hit 400

Only eight or nine guys have ever done it in the same game. The same inning is just remarkable. How many players have ever gotten up to bat twice in the same inning with the bases loaded?

I remember Sportscenter mentioning the feat while the game was still on. They did not make a big deal about it at all, and I couldn't believe it. I had to switch to the game myself to see if I had heard correctly.

Jim Northrup hit 2 Grand Slam Home Runs in 1968 in consecutive times at bat.

While that was not in the same inning, it WAS in two consecutive times at bat.

Still, a big feat as you say.

No one mentions batting .400 in a season. The last guy to even come close was at .390 and that was long time ago. If a guy hits .360 now a days
    its a career year.

A stat like that proves the point that today's hitters are superior to hitters 100 years ago. Could you image what Bonds, Howard, and Pujols would do to a pitcher who's throwing a complete game on nearly every start? It would turn into batting practice by the 8th inning every game. You should have had 20 guys with 50+ HR's a season back then with the way they abused pitchers.

No one who swings and misses as often as he does will ever come close to hitting .400.
  • Off the wall stuff:

Most steals of home for a career: 54 Ty Cobb. Jackie Robinson did it 19X, Gehrig did it 15X, and the Babe did it 10X!!

Inside the park home runs. Career: 51 Sam Crawford Season: NL: Crawford - 12, AL: Cobb - 9

If anyone ever wins the triple crown again, I think that it is safe to day that Cobb's record for fewest home runs by a triple crown winner's record is safe: 9

I also think that Tommy Leach's record for the fewest home runs to lead the league is safe - 6
