I did find the one you were talking about:

    PETE ROSE

Thanks for the LINKY, not sur how I screwed that one up, but it's not the first time . . .image

I would be surprised if it ended that high! There are 12 psa 10s currently which doesnt make it that scarce compared to the 1981 Topps PSA 10 with pop of only 2. Both the 81 topps psa 10s sold for around 600 ish a few months back if I am not mistaken...

Yeah he is one of the few reasons I noticed Pete Rose cards sell for as much as they do on ebay...
  • 1960toppsguy1960toppsguy Posts: 1,127 ✭✭
Only thing other ROSE collectors can do is take a chance on getting burnt once or twice, but he will eventually pay the price and have the most to lose if he ever decided to sell! Count me in, I'll take one for the team!image

I agree. Its a little fustrating for myself as well but you are right. Especially on the 80s cards he pays out the arse for. 80s cards were mass produced and Gem Mint 10s will surface. Just a guess but in 10 years from now the pop 12 on that 1981 Donruss card might be pop 57+ or somethin. Just like with the 87 Donruss. Was going for high until the population got up there. Now you can scoop one up for 10-20 bucks from dsl or 4sc.
  • Wow, pretty impressive, for a mass produced modern card.

Kind of off topic, but does the other 1981 donruss card, #251, ever come up for auction in 9? I think I've seen it once or twice.
  • Looking at ebay right now, there is a #251 with a BIN of $8.88. However it is graded by SGC and is SGC96 (Mint 9). Probably could be crossed over to a PSA 9.

Oh, and toppsguy1960 your welcome for the link image
  • Never really understood why people need to have 10 copies of the same card? Maybe he believes Pete will make it to the Hall and his card prices will sky rocket?

Do you have a link to this auction? I am unable to find it.
  • Sorry I didn't see your request earlier. It looks like someone grabbed it. Here's the link for it:

That card is much easier to find in my opinion as opposed to #371image

No worries...and odd that when I searched for completed I couldn't find it. Thank you for the link.

'81 Donruss are tough to find centered and that card stock is horrible. I was collecting the set for a little bit and had about 10% completed. But, too much competition on the star cards and prices like the Pete Rose (ended at $180) made me really focus on my '84 Donruss set. I can't justify paying that price for a card of the '80s unless it's a very condition sensitive rookie card of a Hall of Famer or something and I knew that it would be difficult to actually get it in the future at a lower price. Being patient really pays off on cards like these.

    Good luck guys!

Not sure I understand, the estimate was 1,250.00 and it ended at 180.00?

I'm thinking 180.00 is way too much for that card.

    Good for you.

I agree with the last 2 replys. I decided to sell off my pete rose and mike schmidt collections. I am focusing on a diffrent and newer player's registry set. Since I notice I can scoop up a psa 10 of the player for next to nothing. After seeing how much that pete rose went for there is no way I am willing to dish out that kinda money on one non rookie card! LOL. I scored a condition sensitive card in psa 10 for less then 15 bucks with population of only 2! Thats more up my alley on pricing image

watch and see how many others surface out of the blue, that's all it takes is to prove the demandimage

$1250 vs. $180 is a pretty big difference in value. Did you get an incredible buy?

IMO, $180 is not too much for that card. I once sold a 1980 Topps Pete Rose Highlights #4 PSA 10 (not even his regular card) for $450.

Glad you were able to sell it for that much, IMO someone overpaid for the 80s Topp Rose card though.
  • I am the owner of the #3 Rose Master set and from my perspective that is to much for that card. I think the prices have been over inflated by several of the big Rose collectors. JC Korth is the biggest and pays the most. It makes it hard for us small time collectors to compete but if you can afford it then it's no issue. I just wonder if those type of prices for 80's stuff will ever provide any return.

    Slightly medicated Red

Looking for 81-84 Topps Stickers in PSA 9 or better, 81 Topps Scratch offs, 83 Topps Fold outs in PSA 8 or better, 83 Fleer Stamps and 81/86 Fleer Star Stickers in PSA 9 or better.

Ha, I remember when the first (or second) 1980 Topps HL #4 PSA 10 Rose sold for $1,500

    I got mine for I think ~$300 - $400.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

That is a very volitile <sp> card. Yes I am aware that 1981 Donruss had quality probs but 1,500.00 for that card?

    I guess.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • For the record, I dropped out at $20.14 when I saw collectorcp123 was bidding since he needed this card to upgrade his set. By the way, Collectorcp123 has the #2 Pete Rose Master Set on the registry.

I have suffered the same pain as all fellow Pete Rose collectors. Today Pete Rose cards are not selling anywhere near the levels they sold for a few years prior. I am just averaging down my per card cost by buying at these lower levels.

Please keep in mind that I am always interested in entertaining a sell offer for any 1960's and 1970's Topps Pete Rose in PSA 10. Also I am interested in 64-67 Kahn's Pete Rose in PSA 8 NQ or better as well as the 1960's Pete Rose OPC's & Venezuelan's.

For example, I will pay SMR for the 1964 Kahn's Pete Rose in PSA 8 with no qualifiers. I am willing buy any quantity of these PSA 8 cards if they are available.

For those of you who wish to bail out of any of these cards before the market crashes, please feel free to contact me.

    Best Regards....korthjc

<< <i>Ha, I remember when the first (or second) 1980 Topps HL #4 PSA 10 Rose sold for $1,500 >>

That must have been the second one because mine was a Pop 1 when I got it. I sold that card, the first Brett #450 PSA 10, and another Pop 1 PSA 10 (I'm thinking Joe Morgan if I remember right) to a well known high dollar buyer that most of you know.

I wish I could have gotten $1500 for that Rose but I was happy with what I sold it for. That was back when Rickey's were Pop 4 and fetching $8000.
