    So you're saying that's a loophole?

    Legal, but shouldn't be.

  • That's definately using a loophole, but either way, $6-8 for shipping two boxes of cards isn't that bad considering the USPS rates now.

I agree it's a loophole...seller never states an extra fee for using paypal, just a discount for using MO. Not much different from stating use BIN and get free shipping, IMO.

Don't know if I'd consider that a loophole. EBay specifically states that it is OK to give a discount on shipping for different methods of payment, and that it is not OK to do the opposite. Seems like to much of a pain though.
  • You CAANOT charge a surcharge to accept Paypal, but you can give a discount to use other forms of Payment.

Surcharges are not only against Ebay rules but illegal in many areas. If you say something like if you Pay with paypal you need to add 1.00 you are in violation, BUT if you say if you pay with MO take 1.00 off S&H you are doing nothing wrong. It is much like gas compaines giving cash and credit prices, they cannot charge extra for credit cards but they can give a cash discount.
  • I can't imagine why anyone would go through so much hassle to avoid paypal fees. If you don't want to accept paypal, just don't take it.

Because if you accept PayPal you open yourself up to a LOT more people who will be willing to look at and bet on your auctions. Not accepting PayPal is like opening up a store and saying that you only take Mastercard and no other forms of payment. You limit yourself severely in regards to potential customers. I know that I never even look at auctions if they don't accept PayPal since it's a royal pain in my arse to have to go to the P.O. and get a money order, then send it to him/her, then hope that it doesn't get lost, then wait a while for it to show up and for them to ship the goods. When I use PayPal, I know that the payment was made and received immediately and there is no chance that the payment got "lost in the mail".

Agreed. Taking Paypal is simply not an option for me because, as a buyer, I generally will not bid on items that the seller does not take Paypal and I am sure I am not alone. The convenience, speed, and protection (more of being able to pay via credit card than the protection Paypal claims to offer) just cannot be beat from the buyer's perspective. Thus making it a necessary evil for sellers unless you are willing to bet the (generally) lower hammer price is offset by the Paypal fees.

Just another example of how spoiled we are now and today. When I started collecting we had to WALK to the CARD STORE.... in the SNOW.... UPHILL.... BOTH ways! And, by gum, we LIKED it that way!

Don't forget that not only did you have to walk, but barefoot as well.

And don't forget, not too long before that you bought gum and got some cards with the gum!

I dont think he meant "buy" gum.

I think he meant "by gum", and in sort of a "by golly" kinda way like - "and by golly, we liked it."

But if you knew that already, and just did a spin on it with the whole "gum" thing, then kudos to you. image
