Question about "evid trim" on cards from packs I opened myself

Not too long ago I submitted about two dozen cards from a vintage cello pack I opened myself a number of years back. Most of the cards I submitted for grading came back PSA 8, with a couple of PSA 9 grades and some lower grades of PSA 6 and PSA 7 due mainly to centering. But a handful of cards were returned not holdered due to "evidence of trimming." Since I bought the pack from a highly regarded seller and opened it myself, and most of the cards came back with strong grades, I find the "evid trim" on a few of the cards sort of a head scratcher...can anyone explain what is going on with this? Are some graders just overly cautious with vintage cards that appear extremely sharp like the ones I submitted from this pack? Is it worth resubmitting the cards that were returned not holdered since many of the others from the same pack were 8s and 9s? I'm new to submitting cards for grading and would appreciate any explanations or suggestions some of the board veterans could provide. Thanks for your time!

  • I don't know exactly what years you are talking about when you say "vintage", but I was putting together a 1979 Topps Baseball set the other night, (from packs that I opened myself and obviously weren't searched) and I noticed that there were cards that were shorter than others. However, the opposite was true as well. There were cards that were slightly larger than the standard card should measure. I too have had cards come back as "evidence of trimming", but the funny thing is that you never hear PSA say anything about the cards that measure too big! They just assume that every card that measures short of what the standard card should measure is trimmed.
  • Thanks. These were 1950s football cards, so I imagine there would probably be some variation in size given what I have heard about the production process at that time. Since I know it is impossible that the cards were trimmed, however, is it worth resubmitting them? Has anyone had any experience with this?
  • Yes, definitely resubmit, especially if they are sharp, 50s, and centered.

resubmit. unfortunately I think this might be a part of PSA's business model. since I have sent back cards that came back recolored the frist time and graded the second. so i would say go ahead.

Folks, the key word is evidence of trimming, not "100% guaranteed trimmed". What that means is that PSA is simply making an educated guess that they suspect it is trimmed.

  • Thanks to everyone for their responses. I guess it makes sense for PSA to be conservative on this front, even though it is frustrating from the perspective of someone who is submitting the cards and knows that they have definitely not been trimmed.

I think it has been stated before, but PSA has leaned more toward the "evidence of trimming," over the "minimum size requirement" as of late.

Someone recently said, and I think they had a good point, that PSA doesn't issue vouchers on the "evid of trim," but they do on the "min size." so this may be a reason they slap the "evid of trim" on so freely these days.

In the same light I have a question about evidence of trimming on 69 Topps Decals.

I have a Mays coming back from a recent submission that was cracked from a BVG 9 holder. I know that Beckett grades sheet cut, but how can you tell with the decals?

Beats me. I'll have to compare it with the Aaron I have in a PSA slab.

I'll be posing this question when I get the order back. All six were cross overs and submitted raw. The results are interesting.
