USPS Question

I shipped out a $50 item on June 9th via USPS Priority Mail. The buyer recently contacted me saying they have not received the item yet. I purchased either Insurance or Delivery Confirmation and I used the APC so the tracking # printed out on the receipt. I always keep the receipts for 90 days, but I am having trouble locating this receipt. I know the post office and the date I used the APC for this item. Is there any way to get this insurance or tracking # without tearing my house apart looking for the receipt? Thanks in advance.

I don't have an answer for your current question, but I can help you from losing it in the future. After you get back from the PO you should email the DC # to the buyer. He will know that it is on the way and you will have the # handy in your "sent email" folder. You will still need the receipt to file a claim, but hopefully it will never come to that. Good luck with finding the receipt and package, STEVE.

I always put the date sent and dc number in the notes section of Ebay or Naxcom.

I assume that you used a debit/credit card. Is there a transaction number from USPS on your on line or hard copy statement?

Could the postmaster check the tape for that day on the machine and find the USPS copy of the receipt using your card number? Bet they could find it quickly since you probably have the approximate time also.

    Good luck.

Not sure if you can get a duplicate receipt, i do know this though you will need a receipt if you want to file a claim.

    Good for you.

There is a transaction number associated with the credit card charge. Not sure if it's a Citibank or USPS generated #. I emailed the buyer and asked them to check their local post office to see if they are holding it. I hate to ask someone to do that, but hopefully they will have to make a trip to the PO for something else anyway. I'll check with the PO to see if they can reprint the receipt, although I'm not getting my hopes up on that one! Thanks for the replies.

  • According to my local PO you are SOL without a receipt, they said they can go back and pull the transaction, but all it will show them is the fee paid and how paid for. It will not show DC information or anything like that.

More of a question for my clerk wife than me, she just got home and I asked. She only works in one store that has them, and she doesn't think you can get any tracking information after the transaction is done. Sorry for her bad news image

That's pretty much the answer I was expecting, but thought I'd ask just on the chance there was an easier way. Looks like it's time to clean house. At least the wife will be happy about that!

Update: I found the tracking #. I did not have insurance on it, just DC. USPS shows the item was delivered June 15th, but the buyer is saying they never received the item. Insurance was optional, but not purchased by the buyer. Is there some form I or the buyer should be submitting to the post office now? The buyer has very low feedback (4), although it is all positive and some of it is within the last month. How would you all handle this situation? Thanks.

I don't think there is any paperwork that the PO needs, if there was no insurance on the item. If the buyer tries to file a claim with Paypal, you will win, as you have the DC # and it shows as delivered. The only thing that you are risking is a negative. Email the tracking # to him, tell him to take a 2nd look around the house, his wife, kid, etc. could have tossed it on a desk, table whatever. If he still can't find it he is basically out of luck, you have proof of sending and delivery, all he has is the word of a newbie.

The buyer should be calling the post office and asking where it is. Somebody said they delivered it, he says he never got it. They can easily track who delivered it, if that carrier has a habit of things getting lost they might reimburse you.

If it is scanned as delivered you will win a case with paypal. You did all you could to get it there safely.

I know this is a stupid question, as I have a good guess as to what the answer will be. But if a carrier has a habit of things getting lost and not delivered correctly, why is he a) still delivering on a route and/or b) still an employee of USPS??

Sometimes they're careless, sometimes stupid and incapable of doing the job. Maybe they can't tell the difference between 1971 and 1791 and maybe backus road looks like barkus road to them. Sometimes they think it's really ok to leave a package on the porch in plain view to save themselves a couple minutes.

We have a strong union and it's really hard to get fired. If you have/had employees or tenants you know how hard it is to get rid of the bad ones. If you live in the slums you know how hard it is to get rid of the roaches and rats. Same game different players.

agreed, if it says it was delivered to his house, than it was delivered to his house,he can go back and even find the postal carrier that scanned it,because somebody did or it wouldnt be in the system!

Randy, sometimes lazy carriers scan them all as delivered before they even leave the workroom floor, and some of the other ones who deliver to the wrong address scan them when they deliver them. Just because we say it went in the right mailbox at 10am doesn't mean it went in the right mailbox at 10am.

I almost think sig confirmation should be required on all packages, but it would cost so much more that people would never go for it.
