Let's all bow our heads and say adeiu to the most exciting team in the NHL the past two seasons.

eta;Drury took 5/35 mil we offered 5/30... just wish management had tried a little harder...
<< <i>Losing Drury, man that hurts. Heart and soul of this team, Captain freaking America, and we let him go over a mil a year. While I think it's crazy the 8 year deal Briere got (we'll see how he does in Philly), Drury's loss makes me really freaking miserable. Every game a sell out, so much in merchandise sales, so many soon to be disappointed season tickets holders, and we're not going ot pay anybody...I guess Ryan Miller sees his future pretty clearly. I need a few more beers

WFT was management thinking?? And don't give me this 'small market' crap-- it's the NHL, there is no TV money, and Sabs tickets sell as well as Wings tickets.
I think it's just a tragedy. The Sabs were a blast to watch-- their first round matchup against the fraudulent Flyers in '06 was one of the best playoff series' I've ever watched. And now I'm going to have to resort to pulling for the freaking Lightning and Pens in the East, since I think the Sabs are going to really go downhill in 07-08.
A genuine bummer for Buffalo fans in particular, and a loss for NHL fans in general. I'm basically a Wings fan, but I really feel for you guys out there.
<< <i>One more time: Drury and Briere would have stayed in Buffalo for less money than their market value had the Sabres shown genuine interest. The Sabres’ gross miscalculation concerning this situation will cost them plenty of fans, which translates to plenty of money. It’s bad business. >>

As I think about this a bit more this AM, I've gotta believe Drury re-signs here if management doesn't slap Briere with that lowball offer. That extra 5 mil is peanuts when you figure in the cost of living difference. I think he just sensed that this kind of stuff (guys leaving) was going to keep happening over and over for the next few years as some of the younger guys get more service time.
Free agents are getting snapped up left and right. I have a feeling management doesn't really care and we'll end up with some late free agency "bargain" signings if anything at all...
If I was weeping publicly over being transfered from one office to another I have to think my affinity for my workplace would be such that I would be willing to take a 20% pay cut in order to return to my original place of employ. Particularly if the numbers being bandied about were in the mid 7 figures. As Budd Fox famously asked, 'how many yachts can you water ski behind?' But hey-- I guess that just gives me another reason not to like him. If I were an Oilers fan right about now, after having seen Peca, the moron Pronger, and Smyth depart (and not return) over the past year, I'd be ready to flip the NHL the bird and get my energy behind a local farm team. And actually, this brings up an interesting question-- is the NHL the only sports league in North America where the fans who are the most passionate and loyal are also those who get bent over the most by player movement?
The more I see of this kind of staged sincerity the more I appreciate mercenaries like Gary Sheffield and ManRam, who don't at all apologize for the fact that the team they most want to play on is the one that will give them the most dough.
