He might be THE single most annoying SOB in sports, even more annoying than Joe Morgan.

I may be the only person who likes him. He is arrogant and full of himself but not afraid to speak his mind and step on some toes
along the way if he feels he has to. I also liked Howard Cosell for the same reasons.

Bill Simmons has taken to calling him The Notorious S.A.S.

He is more annoying than Larry Merchant combined with any of the female sideline reporters who have not bothered to learn anything about sports.

smith is annoying but sometimes he says exactly what everyone else would like to say but doesn't have the stones to say...

i vote tim mccarver most annoying
    Fred

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • S.a.S is a douche bag; and very annoying, but
Tim McCarver is by far the most annoying, irrelevant announcer out there.

nobody else thinks Walton is the worst /most annoying announcer in the world of sports?
    Collecting
    HOF SIGNED FOOTBALL RCS
  • I'd rather have a guy like Smith who is determined and persistent with his viewpoints than people like Buck or McCarver who just don't have anything meaningful to say - ever. At least with Smith you know where he stands, and why he feels that way, with most others, you have no idea what they stand for because they go out of their way to say as few thought-provoking statements as possible.

Goose couldn't agree more, Morgan and Smith are the worst.

It took me awhile but he doesn't bother me. Sometimes he is dead on and sometimes way off and in that respect he is not different from most of his genre. Rome is more irritating to me, however he has gotten better since he calmed down and quit screaming all of the time. McCarver is irrelevant, I just tune him out.

He doesn't say stuff because that's how he feels, he does it to be a loud, pompous arse hole with a "unique" perspective. He tries to stand out from his peers but the schtick is now yesterday's news. Rasing his voice doesn't make his opinion any more factual.

I heard the ratings from his short-lived failed show were so bad that reruns of The Golden Girls were consistantly beating him image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

I think I was one of maybe 100 or so people nationwide that watched that show at least from time to time. image

#1 on his hate list - The NCAA with their rules and policies.
  • When you are vocal with your opinions, people are going to either embrace you or hate you - there is no gray area with him. I'd rather have 100 SAS's then the non-committal announcers like McCarver or Buck. No, he doesn't say the things he says to be 'pompous', he says them because he believes in them and isn't afraid to vocalize his opinion.

20 seconds of Golden Girls dialogue is wittier and better written than 20 hours of Stephen A. Smith. image

  • I don't really see the big deal in "vocalizing your opinion" these days. Seems to me almost everyone on ESPN is doing it.

Smith is just another gas bag full of hot air whose point isn't made clearer by him yelling at me. I can't believe he still works there.

I kind of like him too. His NBA analysis is usually well thought out, and he makes things interesting with his personality -- the other NBA guys (except Walton) on ESPN are BOOOOOOORING!!!! He should stick to NBA analysis, though, his show sucks.

Actually, I like Walton, too, and Barkley on TNT, who many think is annoying as well. On TNT, I like Marv Albert's play-by-play as well, even though his kinky sex scandal was rather disturbing. It is quite remarkable how Albert recovered from that -- probably a textbook case study in crisis PR management.
