Lunar clip

This no date zinc cent looks like the moon.
It was given to me by someone that didn't care for errors. It has a weak rim probably because the planchet was so under-sized that the upset mill didn't raise it and lacking the full rim (other than from being struck) so I don't see any Blakesly effect. It's zinc and is plated in the clip area so I assume it must be real. I haven't seen many cent clips as big as this one. Are there any other diagnostics to look for? image

it has a very odd appearance--very bubbly planchet.
  • That is one big clip. Looks like it needs an acetone bath and some blue ribbon. image

I was hoping someone has a big cent clip like it to show? image

I wanted to see how the Blakesley effect shows on a big clip, I'd imagine since the upset rollers will only upset the rim in the full width area of the planchet that the low area should be as long as the clip area but I've never seen a big one on a cent. What I'm thinking is a big clip like this going through 2 rollers (but I'm not sure how many rollers the mint uses?) might just go through without getting upset anyplace, then it might just have a low rim all around like this one so I'm eager to see a big one like it to be sure.
Come on, post one if you got one image

Also it has plating in the clip area and it's a zinc cent.

If I'm interpreting that photo correctly it looks very similar.

So is what I said true that Blakesley does not show on huge clips like it does on the minor clips?

On the one Jonathanb posted and the one I posted if they went between 2 upset rollers they will just sneak through the thin way, not get an upset rim other than from the strike itself. There won't be a typical Blakesley effect like on minor clips just a low rim all around.

After seeing your photo (assuming that one is real too) I think the one I posted could be real. Any thoughts?

Tried to get the edge here:

It's either genuine (my opinion), or someone went to a lot of trouble trying to fake it. The inside edge of all genuine zinc cents clips will be copper, this is because the blanks are punched before they are plated. The only way your coin could have the copper on the inside of the clip and not be a genuine error is if it was replated after it was damaged, which is a long way to go to fake a $10 error.

It's not unusual for Blakesley effect to be missing on larger (20-40%) clips, I think there is a tipping point where the blank is so small it the rim avoids being upset entirely.
